STANDING AROUND poem

from the ABC set ALBERTA POEMS then and now

Standing Around

From earth’s dominion
cows stretch necks
and tongues to

a ravine flush with
rain water

others linger muddy feet
away. Guernsey’s
in brown and white colours
lessons for mankind

the day an exercise in
non-activity.

Disturbed from squatting
rest two ducks flutter
across the pond

and cows stare at hurrying
wings.
