brings better times, chewing gum
like a kid trying out for the baseball team
anxious, testing each chew
of lasting flavour--
continues down the street wearing
her new dress, a bargain for two bucks
at the second hand
store around the corner, back
of the bingo hall
heads for a favourite part
of town where a chic brand of clothes
are popular; a good spot to
collect quality butts by the curb,
her true mission today.

Thank you, Nathan. I feel so sad for folks getting hooked on cigarettes. My dad had an operation to remove part of his lung due to smoking, and he said it was a terrible ordeal; had to go on life-support twice. Hope you don't smoke. Richard LP
