If you meet me, have some sympathy 1

from the ABC set 200 words

I felt the pavement wet and cold on my ear as the dull grey day yawned itself into being. Head throbbing and stomach clenching, I heaved myself up and staggered along the street towards the river, trying to remember how my legs were supposed to work. Leaning over the wall above the brown swirling water, I waited for my retching to subside and then tried to get my bearings. There wasn’t much time.

The city had changed a lot. At least one of the bridges had been replaced and the old warehouses that had once lined the opposite bank were now spruced up apartments. Thankfully the river was the same and I welcomed its familiar muddy smell.

I looked around cautiously, aware that they would soon be searching for me, but it was still early and few people were up and about. An old lady sifted through some rubbish a little way along the embankment.

Was she the target? It seemed unlikely.

I pulled up my collar against the cold and glanced back up the street behind me. The crack through which I had emerged into this world snapped shut with a puff of smoke and a whiff of sulphur.

Oh well, here we go again. I'm afraid it's as mad as ever ...

oh good! Glad you've started another one. I like the way you always mix the normal everyday with a bit of smoke and sulphur. Really good title

MistakenMagic | February 21, 2011 - 16:53

'Here we go again' - great! Can't wait for another adventure with you, Rob :) Well done on the cherry!

Love that title and already questions... great beginning. :-)

Thanks very much Scozen and Insert and Magic.

No worries Scozen about the previous one. If you want to read it all, a complete version has been kindly accepted by the World of Myth ezine for their April edition (http://www.theworldofmyth.com - I suspect they want me to advertise it).

Insert - yep I think it may be smoke and sulphur all the way ...

Magic - thanks for dropping by. Good that you're back.

Settled myself in for a lengthy chapter and was surprised at the briefness of this ... but it means that, if they are all similar, I'll go and read the rest of them now, and then, no doubt, nag for you to write more.

Did you have to write about puking in the first thirty seconds? I have the hugest puke phobia and at 6 in the morning, too. But I forgive you, the writing's good and I got into it quickly.

The final para slipped through the crack in the ether and came out of nowhere, I thought we were talking morning after stuff. Nice one ... got me.

Thanks very much Sooz. Apologies about your phobia - I tried to make sure it wasn't too graphic.

Great writing! I really enjoyed this and will most certainly continue. It's to not have to wait for the next instalment!

All the best,

Steve.

Thanks very much Steve. I hope you enjoy it. It goes into rather strange places along the way ...

Hiya Rob came to start this and knew within the first para that I'd read it before (it was the puking) But I'm going to re-read to catch up.
Can't understand why I'd only read have of planet blue though and still read some of this, did you post them simultaneously, like my with Phantom and Crush?

rjnewlyn | May 15, 2012 - 16:54

No, they came one after the other. I wish I had your versatility and back catalogue!

Very odd, I wouldn't normally read something before finishing the first.
