Going to Taco Bell with Dirk

My housemate Dirk
works hard and late
(he earned a literature degree from an Ivy League university
before going "crazy" for years)

Now he studies computers at the local university
and then busily delivers pizza
by the ever-present American street-lights,
which used to inspire me so
for a reason I understand...
but on paper would seem
bizzare and outlandish

After that,
he drives us to Taco Bell;
I really have no choice
considering how he altruistically helps me
but I do like Dirk
though I'm not really one
for deep gratitude

Besides,
it's become a ritual
and I'm for a ritual
(or anything at all habitual)

Dirk orders his burritos
without any cheese or sour-cream
(his doctor says he has high cholesterol
though he's fit and thin)
and then complains about them;
this shouldn't bother me
but it does

I don't like Taco Bell much either:
but it isn't so bad after all...
and there isn't any cure

Dirk is mostly a cheerful, relaxed person
but, not being a philosopher,
he takes a comfort from a very cynical philosophy.
He always says this city of Medford is dying:
I don't know where he gets that idea from
(maybe the depression craze on the TV,
which makes little sense after Thai villages and slums)
but sometimes I wish his black hole sun
would really come
