An unknown soldier

I think I'm a bit in love
with you

you, who I see
through mist
and rubble

and smoke-filled
craters

walking towards me
dusty-uniformed

glowing brightly
your Officer's cap
angled just right

smiling as you
pick me up
and run with me

through red-dotted fields
newly sprouting
over the scars

of battle-grounds
already passed
into a sunset future

where the child-me
who has no name
no relatives

would time-travel
just to meet you
to know you

to love and be loved
and to have you
live your short life

all over again
only this time
with no fighting
no wars

just come
to me through
the mist and rubble

and take me to
the grassy banks
of Fromelles

from whence you
came in dreams
one night

allow me that

exciting start.. ......... and you travel in time from
the adult to the child, in an attempt to see this person from the past.

my grandfather served both ww's so this is poignant for me too.

Hello seashore,

this is absolutely beautiful, I think it's one of
my favourites of yours.

You have captured a moment in time so well, a great
tribute to the man in the photo.

Thankyou for the read.

Jenny.

fatboy74 | May 25, 2011 - 11:21

wonderful stuff - probably my second fav of yours. Perfectly pitched. :-)

Thank you Maisie and Jenny for the positive feedback - very much appreciated.

seashore | May 25, 2011 - 11:33

Hi Fatboy - thanks as always for your comments. Now I'm wondering which was the first fav??

Thanks eds for the cherry!

fatboy74 | May 25, 2011 - 11:47

resurrection is my fave, as pop larkin used to say it's purfick - this poem runs it very close. :-)

skinner_jennifer | May 25, 2011 - 11:53

Congratulations on the cherries sea-shore,
well deserved.

Jenny.

seashore | May 25, 2011 - 12:42

Thanks for responding, fb! Do you know Resurrection and this one came from nowhere.....a first line and the rest followed whereas I have more than a few that have been subjected to umpteen drafts (sometimes to no avail and abandoned). I have several like that in a folder right now that just refuse to work...

That's really helpful to know - thanks again and hope things aren't too stressful re the moving scene.

seashore | May 25, 2011 - 12:43

Jenny - thank you. That's really kind.

Yes this is very beautiful Coral- I like the way you travel from the battlefield to the childs thoughts and "into the sunset future"- perfect line.

That song does sound vaguely familiar, Julie - thanks for that and letting me know your thoughts. I do appreciate it.

new seashore
Really enjoyed descriptions
of the unknown Soldier from the
war, from a dream and photo.
well done on the cherry!
I remember a song always.
By "Ann Shelton" younger
Run to the station jump on the train
March at the double down lover's lane etc;
julie xx
Cont where the roses entwine
lay down your arms
and surrender to mine
I remember bit about war. and family some in..

So beautiful and dreamy, Coral - I honestly can't pick a favourite bit, it's all just stunning and as Jenny said, a great tribute.

Many congrats on the cherries :)

Hi again Rachel! Thanks for that and all your comments on my work - you're clearly a very `giving' person which I feel sure makes you a great Mum.

Thanks again, Coral xx

Geoffrey | May 29, 2011 - 08:47

I don't know what to say. The problem with your work is that by the time I read it 20 people have already said what there is to say. Well done on cherry, perhaps the harvest is coming after the rain!

seashore | May 29, 2011 - 13:53

Well you have managed to say something after all and thanks for that, Geoff.

Your half-century is in bud surely!

jlb | May 29, 2011 - 13:57

Recently spent an afternoon rummaging around a box full of discarded photos to try & salvage some sort of story from them, something you have managed to do here with one picture with much success!

seashore | May 29, 2011 - 14:45

Thanks so much jib for reading and kind comment. I know what you mean - I've done the same in the past to no avail so not sure how I managed this one!

Nathan Bednarek | May 29, 2011 - 21:16

Very touching, tender and genuine. Such a beautiful piece. Well done.

RachelPatricia | June 1, 2011 - 12:01

Just popped back for another read and to say thank you for such a lovely comment - getting praise for my writing is one thing, but to get it for my personality and mothering capabilities is quite another! Bless you, Coral - I think you're fantastic, too! ;o)
