The Kissing Gate

from the ABC set Some kind of poetry

There is a kissing gate,
"all welcome" said the sign, even me?
A gravel path leads to the door (open)
The hallowed hush bids me enter.

Hesitant, a trespasser, boots scrape the flags
I slip into the nearest pew, the wood polished
and shaped by archaic posteriors, pious hands.

Jesus droops, resigned, waiting.
Did he make his reverant petition,
pay his penny to the bedesman?
or did his faith suffice?

"if you believe...clap your hands"
said peter pan,

Outside the sun warms the grass,
the earth has more claim to me
than a distant, untouchable sky,

Still, I offer up a inexpert prayer,
God wouldn't only love those
without doubt... would he?

Note:
My apologies for making fast and
loose with the term bedesman,
I don't think they existed in
Jesus's time, If anyone
knows better, please feel
free to harangue me!

An interesting poem, Shirley and 'bedesman' an interesting word. 'One paid to pray for another' or indeed 'a petitioner.'

'Harangue' you, I shall not;-)

Particularly like these lines:-

"Outside the sun warms the grass,
the earth has more claim to me
than a distant, untouchable sky..."

Another excellent one, Shirley.

Liked this one, especially your reference to Peter Pan. The innocent shall reign as long as there are gators that tick.

Thanks Tina, for your thoughts, I couldn't resist putting the bedesman in, out of place though he was,

I'm glad you liked it,:~}

Thanks Magic, Churches always make me feel funny,:~}

Bedesman now is for people unable, afraid or ashamed to pray in church, maybe they had someone like a Sanctaidd Cennad, who you can anonymously leave messages, wishes or prayers to, would then pass them on in confidence. The lines
'Outside the sun warms the grass,
the earth has more claim to me
than a distant, untouchable sky,'
when you look out of the window in church and perhaps feel a little silly?
The doubt leaves your prayers open to many, rather than send it to one belief. So it probably has better chances. K x

Thank you Khadai, I have learned from you today,
I would like to think my prayers do get through, to whom I'm not sure, Like the idea of improving its chances!.:~D

P.S. I am going to look up Sanctaidd Cennad now,

shoe | March 7, 2010 - 10:43

Sanctaidd = holy
cennad = leave... ?

This is the best I could come up with, is there another meaning, it is welsh right?

Kahdai | March 7, 2010 - 21:43

Yes, although it's very old-welsh! I think it means messager, perhaps it's cenned, I didn't think to look it up first, sorry. Leave, cadael? There would sometimes be a chain on a tree to leave the wishes on & something to make a sound with. I suppose you could use that kissing gate. :)
