The springy turf and clover sweet
passes swiftly 'neath his feet
which throw up clods of ancient peat
leaving divots in the ground.
Wind that blows his tangled mane
matches him, one and the same
a hurricane, he passes time
waiting for the mistral.
No hill or hedge or bank to high
no stream or burn can be too wide
he takes them laughing, in his stride
a pegasus made mortal.
Atop the crag, up near the sky
he casts a bold and glowing eye
calls a challenge as to why
won't the moon come down to meet him.

I like this a lot, Shirley. You have a good driving rhythm here which suits the subject excellently.
"Wind that blows his tangled mane
matches him, one and the same..."
A couple of my favourite lines;-)

So far as I know it was originally done by Wilson Pickett.
Here's his version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfuHgzu1Cjg
I prefer the version in the film The Commitments.

I quite enjoyed the quirky Sarah McLachlan Ice Cream too -
I think the ice cream is a front for her chocolate addiction.

oh, dear mangone, can it be true,
oh, my dear man, oh clever you,
you found my horse, realised my dream,
then became distracted by ice cream!

Hi, Julie, you're so kind, isn't is amazing what you can find on the web, I usually start to look for something, then find myself looking at something completely different, wasted ages today reading horse poems, found a really good one called WAR HORSE by Eavan Boland, but do look at mangone's link above, if you like horses I think you will like this!

I think you've hit on a winning idea in these times of Hollywood remakes. With the Lone Ranger you could merge 2 different genres - the masked avenger with the vampire killer hero.
With his thirst for justice and his silver bullets will the masked man be able to clean up the American banking stystem and all the vampires that feed off it?
With Tonto, his sexy (female) Red Indian side kick
- trained in the secret magical martial art of the Eagle Cloud Warriors - and his flying horse Silver, the masked man returns to bring fear to the unjust and the undead!:O)
Actually, after a little more ‘thought’ maybe it could be a triple genre film.
I say this because I like the idea of Beyonce skipping round in skimpy outfits so we could alter the origins of the Ranger’s sidekick a bit more and also give her the power of the Sirens, hypnotising enemies with her singing… well, needs some further thought I know ;O)

This is a lovely celebration of the Mustang; his power, his joy and his free spirited nature. I also like the way you compare him to a hurricane and his eye to the moon as if he is a force of nature. I like all the movement in the poem that really takes the reader on a wild ride, even up into the sky as "a pegasus made mortal".
It put me in mind of the film, "Spirit, stallion of the cimarron" and also the play Equus because your poem is at times like an apotheosis of the mustang.
Thanks for a poem that really came to life infront of me.

I'm really pleased you like this on Well-Wisher, I have a life long love of horses, in the wild sense, I pleased it felt that way to you.
