Trees claw the white sky
with outstretched fingers
Reaching from the ground
like drowning souls.
This is the place
within my heart
where still,
the winter lingers.
This is where I hide
my flock of crows.
Snowdrops never grace this place,
nor any other bloom
Frigid earth that never thaws
keeps tender shoots entombed.
Swallow song cannot be heard,
nor yet the cuckoo call
My secret world
is only home
to raven
and jackdaw.
There is a certain
quiet and sombre
pleasure to be had,
in dwelling here
among my crows
in shades of grey and black
I know each and every
one by name, I
guard them jealously
They are companions,
They are memories
my crows are dear to me.
Yet my birds become a burden
and I long to set them free,
but every timid step I take
my crows, they follow me.
I close my ears,
so not hear
their plaintive, hungry calls
Still they follow,
sleek and fat,
And only now, I see.
These carrion birds I
thought were friends are
merely hastening my end
And when under their weight I fall,
They'll be there,
to devour me.

blighters rock | January 25, 2012 - 17:04
Fantastic! My God, for a young lady you are one hell of a writer and maybe now you've started to grow into yourself, you're seeing things as they really are. However treacherous it may seem to remove yourself from the old world, stepping closer to the other side will make firm your resolution if you stick to the path of discovery.
It's such a pleasure to watch you grow. There are other types of birds that sing and flutter their wings. Choose to see and hear these birds and they will appear! You can fly with them whenever you want.
Pick of the day by a mile; desolate, bewitching, black as night, but resolute, firm and so uplifting. This is a cracker. Pat yourself on the back, Sid.

Bloody hell Sid. You can stop this right now. Writing poetry like this is rude when I was just thinking in my dreams that I would do it.
hudsonmoon | January 25, 2012 - 23:18
Wonderful. What a grand talent.
Rich
sid | January 26, 2012 - 00:27

Ha Ha! Big smile from me Sid,
sid | January 26, 2012 - 18:28
Thanks Mark, I'm pleased you liked it, this is my first attempt at 'proper' poetry with rhyme and structure etc, so I'm delighted that it's been so well received. I was afraid it might smell a bit pretentious
Blessing | January 27, 2012 - 11:53
Congratulations girl. So what's next???
sid | January 27, 2012 - 14:33
Thanks Blessing. It was lovely to meet you and hear you read the other week. What's next? I dunno, probably to try and pull myself together instead of lounging around drinking tea and smoking and thinking about poems.. :D
celticman | January 27, 2012 - 18:51
under their weight I fall' the weight of praise. Well done. Great start to the poem and it gets better.
Stan | January 27, 2012 - 20:34
A masterpiece, Sid. Fine images. You've cast quite a spell with this one. Congratulations on POW, too.
scratch | January 27, 2012 - 20:42
Nice one Sid. Congratulations on this great effort; I said earlier I wish I could have written something like this. It thoroughly deserves all its praise and then some. Enjoy the moment. Big smile.
sid | January 27, 2012 - 23:33

Silver Spun Sand | February 24, 2012 - 10:49
sid...no idea how I missed this one. It is just up my street, as they say.
Those first few lines:-
"Trees claw the white sky
with outstretched fingers
Reaching from the ground
like drowning souls."
had me, hook, line and sinker. Brilliant writing, the kind I admire tremendously.
And speaking of crows, as you so eloquently were, we have about five or six who live in and around our field and garden, and sometimes they are amazingly timid and others, amazingly menacing.
Very much enjoyed. Looking forward to more like this.
Tina;-)
sid | February 24, 2012 - 13:41
thank you very much Tina, you're a poetess whose work I am always in awe of so to get such high praise from you feels like a getting a birthday card from the queen :D
Christine | March 1, 2012 - 23:50
So Sid, I have found you. You are a real poet. Every element is here in your poems, all the elements that make REAL poetry - content AND form. There a wee bit of Heaney and Hughes in here I think. I especially like Shall We. I think I could write an essay on it!
MaliciousMudkip | March 2, 2012 - 10:39
Your stuff is fantastic, you should be posting more often, we need more of it! :)
sid | March 2, 2012 - 11:06
Thankyou Mudkip much appreciated! I'm working on it but I keep getting distracted by all the great writing on here
sid | March 2, 2012 - 12:29
Thanks very much christine, you didn't have to come here just because of my comments, I don't dish out with the aim of receiving, nonetheless yojr words are very encouraging, like you I'm always doubting. Hate to admit it but I've never heard of heaney or hughes, I shall have to look them up! Thanks again, now I'm off to get my next fix of Harry Hill I hope!
skinner_jennifer | March 3, 2012 - 15:01
Hi sid,
just got around to reading this poem, I can
understand fully why it's so popular, because
it's so full of amazing images, that take the
reader on a journey into your brilliant world.
I think you have a great original talant and
am very glad I found it.
Jenny.
sid | March 3, 2012 - 18:18
Jenny- thank you for reading and taking the time to leave such a lovely comment, it's much appreciated
Christine | March 3, 2012 - 23:38
Hi, curiosity more brought me here and I am glad it did!
Richard L. Prov... | March 6, 2012 - 04:04
This is wonderful, Sid. I really enjoyed your flow of words, almost like flapping wings, from one branch to another. Did you know crows mate for life? Also, one will not eat the goodies on the ground until the spouse shows up. Richard LP
sid | March 6, 2012 - 11:58
Thankyou very much, Richard. No, I didn't know that. I'm glad to hear that they have some redeeming qualities; I've always been fond of them, despite their bad reputation! Much obliged for your kind comment
blighters rock | March 8, 2012 - 01:25
Cripes, Sid. Reading this again is amazing. Send both in for the comp and I bet you lunch you win.
I think they say submissions can't be published elsewhere, internet included, so check that out.
sid | March 8, 2012 - 13:28
Ah many thanks, Blighter. I will consider entering, but I won't get my hopes up. The last thing I won was an egg-and-spoon race about twenty years ago :D
harrietmacmillan | March 23, 2012 - 17:56
This is a fantastic poem. I also love the bird imagery, it is really beautiful. I felt some quite stark heart-string tugging!
sid | March 23, 2012 - 18:18
Thanks for reading, Harriet. Scratch did a great magpie poem, too, which is well worth a read
Sooz006 | May 15, 2012 - 13:46
How are poet Laureates selected? Do you apply? are they chosen by a committee? However they come about, I think you should be nominated. This is as good as anything that I've ever read.
sid | May 16, 2012 - 11:03
!!!! Bloody hell Sooz. Thankyou indeed what a lovely thing to say :D
Sooz006 | May 16, 2012 - 17:56
I always worry when I comment on things that if people have said something nice about my writing, I automatically say something good about theirs. And I do always try and find something positive to say about everything. But I won't ever bullshit, if I say something's good then I genuinely believe that. So, you're more than welcome.
