Putney Bridge, we met,
on our very first date;
both sixteen, but him –
he was going on twenty-six.
He was late, and he reeked
of Old Spice, as he kissed me
on the cheek. I’d thought
he’d stood me up –
shades of Sandy Shaw’s
‘Boy Don’t Come’ running
through my mind; tears,
streaming down my face.
He wiped them on his sleeve.
Said I looked nice...
even with my ‘panda eyes’.
What’s that they say
about ‘love being blind’?
Hand-in-hand, we strolled
through Bishop’s Park...him
talking football all the way...
and we never did quite make it
to Frankie’s party.
Ended up outside Craven Cottage;
no Lillywhites that night.
‘Such a shame’, he’d said,
but he scored, all right;
albeit in extra time.

Well, I'm planning to catch up with as much writing I missed on abctales as possible and what a good place to start! This is yet another very clever, witty poem, dear Tina, and what a pleasure to read! I can't quite figure out why, but it reminds me of a scene in the show called 'Shameless'... I feel ashamed for watching it ;-(
;-p really well done!

Thanks, Beeme. Most of this way before your time, and wish I could say, mine. But then again...;-) And he's still and avid Fulham supporter!

Sand Lady.
A Fulham supporter you say?
Emm..what league is that...?
Silver Spun Sand | February 16, 2011 - 16:47
Do I detect a hint of sarcasm in your 'voice' ScoZen?;-) I know he was hopping mad the other night, when they missed that penalty against Chelsea.
The air was blue!!
Thanks for reading.
Sand Lady;-)

Of course not Sand Lady, only joking.
We have an Alan Slough x Fulham lives nearby.
Now a soccer coach who had all his medals and cups stolen not so long ago.
Anyway, what do I know about football, I'm from Scotland.
Silver Spun Sand | February 16, 2011 - 18:07
What a terrible thing to have happened to Alan Slough. He must have been devastated.
Scotland, eh? Used to spend a lot of time up there...way back when. My husband spent many months offshore, commissioning safety shut-down systems. Ardesier, mainly. I got to know, Inverness and Aberdeen as I travelled with him when I could. Not offshore, though, of course. Not in those days.

I'm noticing a lot of football references of late as well Tina but no mention of the 'Lions of Milan' AKA the mighty Spurs who I know are your favourite team! Very much enjoyed. :-)

I shall have to put that right, fb;-) Thanks for pointing it out.

Really made me smile this, Tina - love the image of 'shades' of music too. Could almost imagine you 'wink-wink'-ing as I read the final lines ;o)
A brilliant read, as always, and very much enjoyed,
Rachel xx

'Nudge-nudge, wink-wink; know what I mean?;-)

You're very welcome, Tina - no wink-wink needed there. Something tells me you'll always be sixteen at heart - nudge-nudge ;o)
