A far cry from LA;
Great Yarmouth –
the most we could afford
for a holiday...
way back then
and yet nowhere
in the world
could have bettered
that late, June day
as, after lunch,
I watched her
walk barefooted
on the rocks
through pools
of saffron sunshine.
She knelt – shaded
her eyes as a seagull
surfed the wind
in the skies
above her head
and I drank her in.
The pockets
of her dungarees
stuffed with stripy shells,
we headed back
to our B & B;
she pressed
in my hand...
a heart-shaped
pink one...
“For you, Mum,”
she said.
I have it still
and even
in the icy grip
of winter – warm yet
from an afternoon
that can never
come again.

Tina,
I think your memories of your daughter are so loving
and especially in this poem.
It was nice to hear a summer poem, at this time of
the year.
It must be hard for you with Christmas coming, but
I hope that your fond memories give you comfort.
Jenny.

Yes, Jenny...Christmas and New Year are full of poignant memories, but some of them still manage to make me smile;-)
Thanks so much for your words.

a lovely memory Tina - and one with nice weather, which makes a very welcome change at the moment - thank you!

I know what you mean, insert:-) The wild ducks that frequent our little pond are getting slightly battle-weary, after crash landing, at least twice, on the ice!!
Thanks for reading and keep warm;-)

So beautiful, as always, Tina ;) The image of the seashell anchors the whole poem - I love the idea of objects connecting the past with the present and it's a connection that can never be broken!

I was just remembering that I won't be having the Christmas phone call or books from my Dad this year (lost him a few years ago). Lovely poem and lovely memory to have.
Silver Spun Sand | December 18, 2010 - 18:29
I am so sorry about your Dad, Camilla. Thank you for sharing.
In the end we are left with memories; the happy ones are pure gold.
