Campari and Orange

from the ABC set Silver Spun Sand Poems

Glass in hand
hammock
swinging –
glimpse a Painted Lady
chance to catch her breath
on willow-woven fence
wings outstretched
aquiver
at the whim
of the wind.

On the hill
cows for milking
in undulating never-ending line
lethargically
trundle.

Shade my eyes;
sight the field that lies
between two bristle pines;
all but shine
last year’s cones
golden-bronze
sun-dried.

Sink the dregs of
my Campari
as a day-weary sky
turns pink
then orange.

The distant bark
of a muntjac to its mate –
splices the silence
of it all
and I wish life
hadn’t left it this long
to find me.

This is the second poem this week that I've read that has featured a 'painted lady' - strange the coincidences that life throws our way ;) Loved the imagery of the cows and the overall soothing atmosphere of this poem!

Well thank you, Magic.

I love cows too...even though, a good few years ago now, one trod on my foot!!

So atmospheric and so...oh, just see it, am there, really got me, this one.

Think it would be even better if you put a stanza break after each full stop - they seem to fall quite naturally,

Hey- thanks for that, Jennifer;-)

Have put in the stanza breaks now. I had it that way originally, then I changed it. But I certainly agree with you that it works much better with them. As you say, naturally they are there anyway.

Cavalcaderl - thank you so much for reading and taking the trouble to comment so positively.
I am glad you enjoyed my poem:-)

Dear Tina, you amaze me. Not the fact that this poem is up there with all your others but the fact that you persevered over a couple of years to make it perfect. What dedication. In contrast I am too idle to give mine a second look and I know that this will horrify the purists.
Campari, eh? It may be that, and the Italian sun, that led to certain events to occur many years ago.
But I digress. I enjoyed the read.

I am so pleased you noticed this, Luigi. I am in fact, re-writing the bulk of my work. It beats sufffering with writer's block any day!!

I do adore Campari, especially with orange, although I don't have it much these days. When I used to travel with my other half on business trips abroad, especiall in the Middle East, there was nothing like it at the end of sometimes, a frustrating day.

And, dear Luigi... you are at your best when you digress, so please, feel free;-)

I thank you so very much for your words.

I have just found this and am delighted I did. Actually I think delightful is the perfect word for it. Congrats on another well deserved cherry.

Hi

Just chanced upon your poem and the more I read it, the more I love it. It really does flow and takes the reader along with it..a bit like swinging to and fro in that hammock. I especially like the last few lines about life taking its sweet time. Lovely, a real treat!

Hi there! How rewarding this is and I thank you so much. Hey - you are in good company. My daughter too, really loves this and says it shows the real me. I guess it shows the real 'you' too.

Many thanks for reading, and for taking the time and trouble to let me know you enjoyed it;-) Means much.
