Cote d'Azur

from the ABC set Silver Spun Sand Poems

It rained for almost
the entire fortnight –
we may as well
have been in Bognor,
but on our very last day
at least the sun came out
and it was hot.

You stripped off
on the beach – a towel
hiding your newfound
modesty – just turned
thirteen, going on
twenty-one.

You fancied a swim –
I walked with you
to the shore – my arms
outstretched; minder
as I was, to all things yours.
Your clothes, your shoes...
your heart, that until then
you’d worn on your sleeve.

I watched you wade
until the sea passed
your waist – shrug off
the sun as it nudged
your shoulder; you turned
and waved – beckoned
me to follow. And I might
have done, except my arms
were full and where you led
I could not go.

'I watched you wade

- love these lines, Tina! This is a beautifully visual poem and I really like the combination of wisdom and absolute innocence ;)

Thanks so much, Magic;-)

I am glad you found this poem 'visual', which was my aim and the mix of emotion between youth and maturity exactly what I had hoped to achieve.

Have a good week;-)

I can thoroughly concur with Magic's comment. Those are my favourite lines too.

Just beautiful, I love the penultimate stanza and the bittersweet end. One thought, should it be past instead of passed, perhaps either would suffice.:}

kheldar | August 17, 2010 - 14:11

Hi Tina, a beautiful but profoundly sad poem, I love the final line:

And I might
have done, except my arms
were full and where you led
I could not go.

I can't help but feel this line refers to more than the event in question.

Beeme | August 17, 2010 - 15:29

This is very beautiful Tina :) I really like the double meaning of the last verse too, like David I can't help feeling there is more there, than is written.

Hi there, Shirley. Pleased you enjoyed.

As to 'past' and 'passed' that is one thing I am never sure of. Shall have a little think about it;-)

Tina

Silver Spun Sand | August 17, 2010 - 16:37

Again, Beeme, you too saw the meaning of this poem. It is dear to my heart, as what that day, sadly, so far away and in another world now.

Thank you for your perception;-)

Thank you so very much, Luigi. Great minds obviously think alike;-)

How perceptive you are, David. Yes indeed it refers to my late daughter, and goes far beyond that particular event, as you guessed.

Pleased that, as always, you got to the heart of it;-)

Hi Tina,

I cannot speak for others who read your work, but for my part I feel honoured that you are able to share such a personal and painful part of yourself with the ABCtales community and through that, as a member of that community, with me .

David xxx

Silver Spun Sand | August 17, 2010 - 17:55

David, thank you for that. Likewise, I feel honoured so to do.

It has only been by being fortunate enough to be able to share my feelings with others, like yourself who are kind enough to listen, that has given me the purpose to get on with this day to day thing we call living.

Another touching peice; very well done; it does help ease the pain to write about it but its a lot harder to let others see it, i know. We open ourselves up when we show our writing to others. You are very brave to share this with us - thank you.

Darkenwolf - I appreciate your comments greatly. They mean much.

Beautiful, powerful
poem, of love and devotion.
Yes, I felt the same way as
David after I read.
I knew what and who you mean't
your beloved daughter.
Very sad all these things happen
to people, in all walks of life!
Most mine based on therapy,
like MistakenMagic says.
and I can now, feel people's
pains, and empathy with all.
when you've been there?
to the only way foreward is
to understand, and listen
and help maybe other's.
But we can't always, name, or say
what we want. For safety reasons.
Quite often put my foot in it.
But if it help's someone I am pleased
I was part most of the machine, in.
Started from Kheldar David's story?
and few names of us, in so tried put
those in David mentioned.
Bit weepy eyes, over the poem
I tried lovely comments, coming in
"The Brush Off!

I love the sense of nostalgia this conjurs up, a sense of loss and of times past. Really beautiful and evocative.

Silver Spun Sand | August 27, 2010 - 07:47

Thank you so very much;-)

The feelings and emotions of which you speak, are exactly what I endeavoured to convey to the reader, so I am really pleased to know it did just this for you.

Hope you have a pleasant weekend.

Tina, I love the sea & cant help running into it clothes or not, as soon as ii can see it! yet am also afraid of other people on the beach, is it innocence? oh and what is the title?, made me think Ii wouldnt be able to read trhis poem! glad ii could though and am glad you can write about your daughter & share it with us, I think most of your poems about her are wonderfully joyous & nostalgic anyway, so its good thing! I dont understand the ending, yet I think it is sad, ii never like you to change such good writing, yet I prefer happy endings. K xxx

My god Tina I am struggling not to blub after reading that - absolutely fabulous, one of the best poems i have read on here. You capture the very essence of loss in this, all the more heartwrenching as it is never directly referred too - what a wonderful and brave piece to share, you are a star. :-)

Silver Spun Sand | November 12, 2010 - 21:23

Thank you so much for reading this, fatboy and for your empathetic words and kind thoughts.
