Flatfish, scat, fish,
find yourself a match, fish,
a Sprat, fish or a Catfish –
whichever kind you wish, fish.
If your name is Jackfish
time to make a splash, fish,
so bait fish and Skate, fish,
take yourself a mate, fish.
It does no good to pout, fish
although you be a Trout, fish –
pretend that you're a Queenfish,
find yourself a dream, fish.
Maybe you’re a Shrimp, fish
but no one dates a wimp, fish;
don’t act like you’re a fool, fish –
sparkle like a Jewelfish.
Shack up with a Sunfish,
have yourself some fun, fish
or be cultured as a Pearlfish,
set suitors in a whirl, fish.
Be sharper than a Knifefish,
woo yourself a wife, fish.
Quit acting like an Angelfish
drive those she-fish crazy, fish.
Stay frigid as a Stonefish –
you’ll live your life alone, fish,
moreover be a bold fish,
never good as Goldfish.
Stop making like a Dogfish
and hearts for you will throb, fish;
be brazen as a Swordfish,
bag yourself a broad, fish.
But better make it snappy, fish
or settle for a Crappiefish;
don’t dawdle like a Snailfish –
grab them by the tail, fish!
You really are a Goosefish,
so let it all hang loose, fish
and if you be a Cuttlefish,
give it loads of muscle, fish.
No excuse if you’re a Pupfish,
it’s time that you grew up, fish,
even Monkfish can have fun, fish,
so just go ahead and hump, fish.
Be bold and bang your Drumfish
or forever doomed a dumb fish
but never date an Icefish
unless you be a Firefish.
Get out there in the swim, fish,
not a Sardine in the tin, fish;
a man-fish needs his Ladyfish
or else there’d be no baby fish.
Don’t end your days as paste, fish –
a travesty and waste, fish;
be the one who gets away, fish …
not the catch of the day, fish!

This is great- what fun! Very much enjoyed :)

I enjoyed writing it, so I am pleased;-) I have to say, that I was amazed at how many types of fish there are, having only touched on about 30 in this poem. The trouble was, the more names I found, the longer the poem became...until in the end I had to call a halt and save the others for another time;-)

Well it's an absolute cracker Tina :) I want to try and make some witty fish related remark but my brain just isn't up to it today!
Thanks again for a great read x

White Dwarf | November 29, 2010 - 11:27
You don't need to draw... I see loads of them that are just colourful photos.
I can see a funny mix of photos and stick figures :P
Tins of Sardines and colourful odd things that fit the stanza

You've set me to thinking, now White Dwarf. Tins of sardines, etc. etc...A 'plaice' for everything and anything, as one might say;-)

A really fishy tale from the fish wife
well done Tina- a real laugh- yes a children's rhyme.
;)Pia
Silver Spun Sand | November 29, 2010 - 19:15
Glad you enjoyed, Pia...See what you mean about the children's rhyme, although I doubt that what the monk fish might get up to, would go down too well with their parents;-) I guess I would have to change 'hump' for something less pictorial;-)

Ha thank you Tina. If you notice when you read it I actually utilised a formula similar to Dr Zuess :)
I actually wriggled & giggled with childish glee while I read this 'fishy' poem!
