The ritual spring-cleaning of cupboards
as is done, if the occasion
so arises;
 
two mugs stashed – each in each;
so tight I can’t prize them apart
for fear they’d break in my hands,
 
content in each other’s company –
in an enduring dark.
 
I should bin them...history,
him and me; his – a lighter shade 
of bullshit yellow, and mine –  
pink, with sprigs of, boringly blue,
forget-me-nots.
 
Yet, if I did trash them, I’d need
to buy replacements, but my wallet –
nigh on empty...
 
save for a couple of ticket stubs 
for Swan Lake at the Royal Albert Hall...
and one cuff-link – mother-of-pearl, 
set in silver...sadly, tarnished;  
 
a yin, without a yang.

I like the way you start out with something mundane, like a boring task that leads from the pairing in the dark of something stuck but too fragile to be parted - in a comparison with the relationship, to a wallet which tells a story of lovely times spent, and the suggestion of separation - in the cuff link. The line that interested me most was - 'Yet, if I did trash them, I’d only have to buy some new ones,' - they being unusable in that condition, but to be replaced (stuck together?) I wasn't sure...

Hi Bee, glad you got so much for this.  Guess what I was trying to convey, in the line you highlight, was the fact the mugs were useless as they were, yet couldn't bear to risk parting them...nor throwing them away either, if you see what I mean.

Thanks for giving it so much thought and your thoughts, inspiring as ever.  Oops, and as to your second question, not it's not mine, but I do collect china at local bootfairs and such.  Oriental stuff - that's what I really admire.  So intricate, and so delicate.

How weird, Bee, I too love the quirkiness of mis-matched china, and enjoy the challenge of finding bits and pieces, which are different, and yet somehowl complement each other. My entire collection is like that, much to the annoyance of my other half, I might addsmiley

As to that sun, yet it is.  I got up this morning just before seven and was lucky enough to see it rise.  A wonderful sight.  Thanks for sending it my way.

I am driking now my coffee, odd, from a china cup. But I got the feeling that's no better way to drink a coffee in the morning, and reading such nice poem.

Hi Tina,

the ability to create a poem from everyday objects is so inspiring. China that has given pleasure once, then long been left in a cupboard, reminds me of all the china I have that belonged to my Gran, which now sits in a cabinet at the back of our settee and never sees the light of day.

I enjoyed reading your words, which I hope will motivate me to take my own china out and clean it.
