“On far-off fields, by elm and oak,
I see the lights. The Camp-fires
of the Past are burning.”
Henry Van Dyke ‘Indian Summer’
To the timpani of cicadas,
speechless we lay, counting
the fireflies and the stars...
Our intention, at least, except
my gaze didn’t make it that far...
And of stars there were plenty;
sprays of tiny brown ones
on her shoulders and her arms...
and her eyes flashed
more colours than Sirius.
Beneath the night
of her skin, azure streams,
that fed the Seas of Tranquillity
and of Nectar, ran deep...
Such was her beauty;
a kind of aura – running rings
around the moon. Even
the braces on her teeth, shone
a moonshine kind of brilliance...
When you’re almost thirteen
and a budding Valentino,
you’ll even wax lyrical...
to bag Grade Seven’s
French-kissing queen.

Heck, even if you have to bag 'em, it's the end results that matter. wink-wink nudge-nudge. I was moonstruck by a brace once myself! Congrats on the cherries...SSS

- loved this stanza, Tina. There's such beauty in the narrator's naivety. I get such a sense of 'joie de vivre' from this poem! My sister and her boyfriend both have braces, you know, it's so cute! ;) Well done on the cherry!

Thanks, Magic;-)
I didn't think it would be long before braces became fashionable. My sixteen year old granddaughter pleaded with her dentist to fit some, but he doesn't think they're necessary, for now at least. She still lives in hopes though.

Hi Tina,
Unfortunately when I had braces, the kind welded permanently in place, they were anything but fashionable. People were all too quick to point out the similarities to "Jaws" in "The Spy Who Loved Me".
Enough about me though, this is snother great poem. The contrast between the lothario's words and his intentions is brilliant.

Hi there, David...yes, they have indeed come a long way with 'braces' as with many other things in this twenty first century of ours;-)
I remember seeing that Bond film with my two children when it first came out, years and years ago now, and I shall never forget "Jaws'" wonderfully endearing smile;-)
Glad you enjoyed my poem and many thanks for your, as always, lovely comment.

Can I just say what a aid to seek out somebody who actually knows what theyre speaking about on the internet. You definitely know learn how to deliver a problem to mild and make it important. More people must read this and perceive this aspect of the story. I cant imagine youre not more widespread because you positively have the gift.
