And so, it’s all over –
bar the alimony;
what’s yours
and what’s mine
more or less decided.
Trust you and she
are settled in
to your brand new
love-nest. Who am I
to shake the tree?
Us three, we’re OK...
the flat’s small, but fine,
except the kids
miss their friends, and me –
I miss the garden
but I’ll survive.
I hope you find
this card appropriate;
addressed to you both,
naturally. Lilies, so pure
so white, and the loss –
yours, not mine.
Speaking of which –
ditched that rug
a week ago...the one
with those stains...
where we – you know...
The one with the tassels
we were attached to.
See, it came to me
in a flash – realised
for thirteen years
and eleven months,
I’d been making love
to an Abyssinian goat;
a shag-pile at that.

Wonderful poem, Tina! I really love the tone of matter-of-factness in the narrator's voice - and that bitter edge works so well! I laughed out loud after reading those final two stanzas about the rug ;)

Love, LOVE, love this! The sarcasm, the hurt, the irony, the caustic humor, the underlying pain; it's just about got it all, including the ability to make the reader smile, which given the subject matter, is class. The 'up yours' last verse is the cherry on a very bitter-sweet cake; brilliant!

;-) Glad you enjoyed and my sincere thanks for telling me. There is one person in the whole world I would love to read this poem but I don't think there's much chance of that...not presently at least;-)
