'Happy New Year'...
It trips off our tongue. We say it
to our friends...the postman
the milkman, and the busker
at the corner of the High Street,
with a three legged dog. Even
toss him a coin; feel good
about ourselves, like we’d done
our bit for humanity.
I was the same...till ten o’clock,
New Year’s Eve, four years ago.
Time for her to sleep, for me to leave
her bedside...her drugs kicking in;
in denial, as I was, I would never
be saying it again...not to her.
Only then to realise how much,
just three little words meant.

Yes- such a sad time of year for you Tina- must be difficult to see a new year ahead with happiness. But that is what I wish you- good memories with happiness in your heart which I know your daughter gave you and which you can express in your poetry- how much she meant to you.
Nice to have you as a fellow Abctaler Tina.
all the best to you and yours...
;)Pia

Wonderful poem, Tina. Especially the last line. Very poignant. Don't know if I've said it already but I hope you've had/are having a Happy New Year.

Hello Tina
A tragic but lovely poem beautifully expressed.
Sophie, I feel sure, sees your happiness and sees your grief. She would want more for you of the first and less of the second so why not indulge her!
Live a happy life, Tina, if not for you then for Sophie!
Best wishes to you for the New year.

Tina, the anguish so poignantly encapsulated, and the reminder to think what we say. Happy memories sharpen sadness, but sadness that didn't have them would be far more bitter and tragic, wouldn't it? and some must taste that, though even then God can comfort. Life is a such a mixture, for now. I hope you store up more good memories this year (and share them!). Rhiannon

Rhiannon, I cannot thank you enough for your words. There is much truth contained in them.
Thank you too, for your good wishes for the year, and I, likewise, wish you a year of happy memories;-)

Indrani Ananda
Tina, this poem pricks my heart with tears. It's just how I feel about this Happy New Year business, when you think about what has gone forever, it makes you apprehensive about saying those three words. Maybe tempting Fate has something to do with it? I'll say to you, "Happy New Poetry"
Indrani.
Silver Spun Sand | January 2, 2012 - 19:40
Well thank you, Indrani. I agree very much with what you say about tempting fate.
I think 'Happy New Poetry' is much more beautiful, and if I may, I wish the same to you;-)
Incidentally, my daughter, Andrea, was a very special person, and if you are interested to know more about her, her story is told in 'Fireworks in the Snow', which I wrote and posted here in August 2008, a few months after her passing.

Hello Tina,
I agree with all the above comments, nothing can take
the pain away, from loosing someone so special, but I
really do hope that with your wonderful writing, it
helps to heal the pain and that knowing her spirit
is at peace, she is up there helping you to write
with the ease that you do.
Take care Tina.
Jenny.

Yes, Jenny...she sure is;-) My writing gives me great comfort, especially when lovely people like you read it, and say such special things;-)
