This is Him...
Coaxing laidback,
Sunday morning
bluegrass
from his guitar
with a matchstick
plectrum;
jeans' pocket
bulging
with ‘Old Holborn’...
two doxies snapping
at his heels.
Him again...
playing poker – flouting
the ‘card speak’ rule...
tight-lipped –
Bill Haley kiss-curl
flirting with his brow
and here he is...
‘mean and moody’,
hanging out
in our backyard
dribble down his vest...
me in his arms.
This is him, too –
that last Christmas,
still hung-over
from the night before;
blood - dried hard
on his knuckles...
unwrapping
the gift I’d sewn.
A hanky; ‘Dad’,
embroidered
in one corner,
in thread
to match his eyes;
the colour
of distant thunder.

Tina, this was much enjoyed. I loved 'flouting the 'card-speak' rule'. 'Dad' is a man of few words, it seems, but his actions and mannerisms say more about him than anything he could say. Compelling character, brilliant poem! Steve.

I agreed with Sooz about reminding me of a cowboy,
especially loved the Sunday morning bluegrass from
his guitar with a matchstick plectrum;
Very mean and broody in a good way, as Sooz said.
There's nothing like a cool cowboy poem to make my day.
Jenny.

Love the idea of the matchstick plectrum and
"in thread
to match his eyes;
the colour
of distant thunder."
is simply beautiful. A magical piece, and time seemed to stand still whilst I read it. Well done on the cherries!
