It was a teenage wedding...
ten months on – all the richer;
one set of twins, two goldfish,
three rabbits and a guinea-pig.
Where did they go – those
swinging sixties?
I muddled through
until the seventies.
Burned my bras;
hippie-clad, welcomed
flower-power, open-armed –
believer as I was
in so called ‘free-love’.
Came the eighties –husband,
a North Sea Tiger ; away...
more often than not. Kids
all grown up, I undid
my apron-strings, binned
‘Happy Families’; sowed
wild oats in pastures new.
He came home for good,
by and by, and I’d slip
into him – he into me,
like one dips inside
a well thumbed book;
intriguing...even though
you’ve read it before –
know it by heart,
line by line; each word,
comma and full-stop.
A new age dawns –
one Friday afternoon;
he’s just returned
from picking up our pension –
suggests a ‘siesta’. Past
indiscretions – forgiven,
forgotten...but for the look
in his eyes.

Thnak you for the trip down memory lane. Really enjoyed the read and the mind wandering it inspired. Now I'll have that song stuck in my head for days.....

It's stuck in my head too, ever since writing this poem. Chuck Berry at his most brilliant! Thanks for reading.

How could anyone forget Chuck Berry's 'Ding-a-Ling'...especially as sung, "I want you to play with my ding-a-ling'. Gosh, Julie...we are going back some;-)
My thanks to you for reading and as always, for your own, very unique, perspective.

A very beautiful poem, I think- unless I am going mad. I have seen some of this before ;-) Thankyou for sharing such a wonderful poem;
I love these lines;
'Burned my bras;
hippie-clad, welcomed
flower-power, open-armed –
believer as I was
in so called ‘free-love’.'

Yes, Beeme, or should that be no...You are not going mad, far from it.
You are one hundred percent correct. This was a complete retitle, rewrite and rethink, but still retaining some of the original inspirational lines. It was a 'difficult' poem to write...hence the changes.
Hey - I think that is what makes you such a good writer...You have a poet's keen eye;-)

I agree. A brilliant piece of poetry indeed. I love the punchy rhythm in this poem. It's a bit like reading what somebody is thinking whilst coming back home or cooking, etc. It's very realistic and the sound of this poem is very natural, but that doesn't take the emotion away. It makes it more human instead. A big well done on this one Tina ;-)

Yes, they are a grand lot on here. I have been with the site for a good few years now, and it has been through many changes but it is still as good as ever, if not better. All the more so for people like yourself;-)

You've no idea how lovely that is to hear, thanks so much Tina.
I joined a writers group in my area last year and as lovely as the people in my group were, writing was more of a hobby to most of them where as with me it's almost the very essence of who I am. If I didn't do something with all these words, I'd burst!
It really does feel like I've hit the jackpot with this site, how I've never come across it sooner is beyond me as I've been google-ing for months!
Everyone is so supportive and inspiringly talented, your comments really do make a difference as they're coming from writers I have a lot of respect for.
I love reading your pieces, and I love your pen name too!
Anyway, I could talk all night about how much I love this place so I'm going to go do something productive and hopefully whatever I knock up will end up on here soon!
Once again you're very welcome for your comments, you thoroughly deserve the praise you receive Tina, and thank you so much for mine, they're cherished!

This is life, yes? I adore the alliteration though I'm not sure if it was intentional: 'swinging sixties', 'picking up a pension', 'suggests a siesta', 'forgiven forgotten'. And the second strophe's my favourite!
