Me, and Her with the Piercings

from the ABC set Silver Spun Sand Poems

On the top of Dunstable Downs
taking a comfort break
on our way back
from London to Luton –
two performing arts
under-graduates.

Not a breath of wind
nor a cloud in the sky.
Venus in alignment
with Mars;
Sirius – never flashing
as bright.

In line of duty
we’d been to see
'The Silver Tassie'.
Courtesy of our neighbours,
and their addiction
for clean, shiny cars.

An opera of limited appeal;
even still –
didn’t want the night
to end...
to slip through our fingers
like a dream –
half imagined
half
forgotten.

The crickets were our strings,
the sheep
in a nearby field –
our baritones;
the midges –
indomitable sopranos
in our, ‘Opera of the Stars’,
lit by an August moon.

On the back seat
of my beat-up Ford Mondeo,
it shed a different light –
gave a whole new dimension,
to the girl
with the silver tongue.

You're amazing SSS. Love the hedgerow orchestra.

This is simply beautiful. I enjoyed the last two stanzas the most. Excellent work, as usual.

So did I;-)

Thanks, chuck.

'like a dream –

Wonderful. You always manage to find just the right words to express a thought or an emotion and you have a wonderful skill of putting it in just the right setting or time.

Beautiful as always. Well done!

Love, Nathan.

Wow! Love the inclusion of astronomy - very reminiscent of Ted Hughes! And yes, I too love the 'hedgerow orchestra'! Well done Tina - another 'little gem' ;)

Ted Hughes! Now you are talking poetry.

'The hedgerow orchestra' is in fine voice this morning, too;-) Many thanks for reading.

i particularly enjoy this stanza. it stands out as having a different pace and feel than the rest. the whole piece is well-written, and reads smooth and dreamy, not unlike an August night.
congrats on the cherry!

There's a real sparkle to your writing. It's also very nicely and sharply cut.

Hi there, Steve. There is a real sparkle to this Sunday morning, too - at least where I live;-)

I wish you a very sunny Sunday, and thank you so much for your kind comment.

Don't know how I missed this the first time around but glad I looked it up now. At the risk of sounding repetitive; you paint a lovely poem and this time with an orchestra added ;) Lovely work as usual; you will have to open a cherry stall. Well done lovely Tina.

Chris - so glad you enjoyed the orchestra. And I've just had a bowl of cherries for my dessert today;-)

Seriously though, your kind words appreciated.
