Three more soldiers
will miss tomorrow’s roll call.
Three more families bereaved,
scarred for life.
There is nothing I can write
for nothing says as much
as a grieving child,
pretty in pink,
laying a wreath
on her father’s coffin,
lifted up in a mother’s arms –
too little to reach.

I think this says it all Tina. Simple and beautiful,
it reads with such power and emotion, like the words are telling their own story. Well done.

Short, yet obese with meaning. Small is beautiful and this poem is very 'small';-)

You need 'roll call' as 'rôle' is a part in a play, or in any enterprise, I suppose.
Nice and tight: I expect most of us feel unable to find the words, and your chosen image says what we can't.
Silver Spun Sand | August 20, 2009 - 10:19
Thanks for that Ewan. I wasn't sure. I should have checked myself.

A sensitive and thoughtful tribute. I like the structure with the couplets - it helps add weight and solemnity somehow. Margot

I just love your turn of phrase here, Nathan;-) Very apt.

Sublime, succinct and nothing wasted except the three lives; woefully lovely, well done.

Chris, your words say so much...in fact everything I tried to say.

Simple but beautiful, another tender little gem, Tina ;) It says so much about what others daren't say.

Magic - you are right. It is a difficult subject to talk about. Hence, less often says more.
Thank you for reading and as usual, for your carefully chosen words:-)

Terribly sad. So much for romance...
“Now if you load your rifle right
And if you fix your bayonet so
And if you kill that man, my friend,
The one we call the foe,
And if you do it often, lad,
And if you do it right...
-
No you won't believe in If anymore
If's an illusion
-
If I knew then what I know now
(I thought I did you know somehow)
If I could have the time again
I'd take the sunshine leave the rain"

Many a true word is spoken in the lyrics of a song, or indeed a poem. Thanks to you for your thoughts, Nolan.
