Nothing Good about Goodbye

from the ABC set Silver Spun Sand Poems

I let you go, some
eight years since...before
you forgot my name –
my face. Before
you chucked your clothes
down a rubbish chute...
and were convinced
there was a tiger
in our front room
and refused to go in
from then on.

Let go of the lilacs
before they were
in bloom that spring...
the ones you used
to pick and arrange,
so carefully, in a vase
on the kitchen table...
before you boarded
that bus returning
from shopping;
a trip you’d made
a hundred times
but you couldn’t find
the way back....

I kidded myself if I said
goodbye, then...before
you were aware
you’d even left,
when it came to the crunch
it wouldn’t hurt as much.
But when I kissed you,
today – said, ‘Until next time,
my sweet...’ you, there,
with your back to me,
staring blankly
out the window,
I knew, ‘Goodbye’,
was just another
dirty word.

This is such a hauntingly...beautiful poem Tina. I can tell you put your heart into this one and no
there's definetly nothing good about goodbyes, like
Richard said, maybe one a lot of people can relate
to.

Thanks for sharing this one, glad you put it on.

Jenny.

I'm with Jenny. A lot of people will relate to this one, and they'll know full well that goodbyes 'made in advance' are actually the hardest goodbyes of all. In these circumstances we say goodbye early to save ourselves the pain - but it doesn't work like that and that's why it's so sad.

Hi there, Jenny.

Yes, you are right; there is a lot of 'heart' in this one, being an expert, as you are, in reading between the lines.

Many thanks;-)

Very very good. I don't really know if I understand the last bit. But it is very good.

Tender, powerful and economical writing. The depth of feeling builds as the poem continues. This is a rare technique and one that is difficult to achieve, silverspunsand you have managed it in buckets. Well deserved cherries. Congratulations.

Thanks for reading, Christine, and I am pleased you got something from it.

As for 'the last bit', I guess what I was trying to convey was that 'goodbye' is just a word, and when you truly love someone, there never can be a 'goodbye'.

The poem was essentially written about my mother, who died in the nineteen eighties, in an asylum. She had Alzheimers, and at the time, little was known of the illness. Thank god we have progressed since then.

The first lines are awesome. They sink you right into the poem and then you can not stop reading. Great work, wish my first lines were so powerful with so little words.
Excelsior!

A heart-breaking but beautiful tale, Tina. The image of the imaginary tiger in the front room is so original and poignant. Very well done!

Yes, wonderful and very moving. Those long drawn-out goodbyes are the worst and becoming so common nowadays.

Late to the party with this one, Tina, but it was well worth the wait. Very sad, though. Going through something like this with my mother-in-law at the moment.
