Past Imperfect

from the ABC set Silver Spun Sand Poems

‘Time does not bring relief; you
all have lied who told me time
would ease me of my pain;
I miss him in the weeping
of the rain; I want him
at the shrinking of the tide.’
(Edna St Vincent Millay)

Sitting with you by the River Cam;
it was raining. We sat beneath
your black and white umbrella
and watched the swans.

How serene, and unruffled
they seemed. Much like us;
standards to uphold.
Heaven forbid we’d break
the moral code. So

we merely brushed hands
and exchanged pleasantries.
Time was on our side
or so we thought...

Threw dreams in the river
as glibly as crusts to the birds
and let day follow day, whilst
we’d talk about the weather...
films we’d watch. How we‘d go
together … one of these nights.

Our passion for poetry; how
we often spoke of love – never
in our own words; only in those
we borrowed. Yet, it’s the things,
we didn’t do, I’ll most remember.

I really enjoyed Tina,

love this stanza;
'How serene and dignified
they seemed. Much like us;
standards to uphold.
Heaven forbid we’d break
the moral code.'

Hello Tina,

This reminded me of a long lost love from the past,
being together, wishing we had said more to each
other, but never actually saying how we felt.

Thankyou for a lovely read and the memories of a
wonderful time in the past.

Jenny.

Hi Tina, really liked this (are you a Cambridge lass?) and especially your last line: And yet, it’s the things,
we didn’t do, I’ll most remember.

Poignant and lovely.

Has an elegant, nostalgic feel to it and the last stanza is utterly charming. Makes me wonder what the time period is.

Hi there, Shirley...late fifties, was what I had in mind, but then I guess, poetry is not an exact science, which is why I find it so appealing.

Glad you enjoyed;-)

Tales of the unrequited are often the world's best love stories - as I believe you've expressed here, Tina! This is really a poem for reading between the lines. Well done on the cherry ;)

A sad one it feels, but very beautiful. As others have said, I liked the last line about the things we remember best being what didn't happen rather than what did. Very true.
