... Presumed Dead

from the ABC set Silver Spun Sand Poems

We used to have so much to say.
Not enough hours in the day
to discuss … whatever.
Politics was always your thing.
That, and the Footsie

whereas, I was more into
who said what to whom
in the latest episode
of The Archers.
Or trying to hum a fantastic
tune I’d heard on Classic FM
or that I’d seen a green woodpecker
in our garden again.

Sometimes though,
we’d merely talk about the weather.
The way we thought
the wind might blow tomorrow
or discuss if we’d have steak
that night for dinner, or maybe
settle for a take-away.
Who we’d back as the winner
in the two-thirty at Aintree.

‘At the end of the day’,
to coin a nauseating phrase,
we seem to have run out
of conversation. As if
there’s this mega black-hole
where ‘we’ got consumed.
There’s still a me and a you,
but the ‘us’ is missing …

We share the same bed – lay
our heads on the same pillow.
Yet, when we hit the lights,
I turn to the right –
you to the left.
You bend into your silence.
I bend into mine.

This is so like life isn't it. You are so good at these observations, recording them. A great talent Tina. Val x

'There’s still a me and a you,
but the ‘us’ is missing …'

This was a brilliant play on words that really resonnated with me!

'Yet, when we hit the lights,
I turn to the right –
you to the left.
You bend into your silence.
I bend into mine.'

I just loved the ending. And Val is right, you always manage to create beautiful poetry from the simplest observations.

I find these lines so deliciously dramatic. It's that there seems to be no protest to what the lines are saying, as if the sad truth had been accepted or the flag of defeat had been raised. This is a very thought-provoking piece dear Tina.

As always, a great read. Well done.

Nathan.

Magic - so sorry I haven't thanked you before. I have been so busy of late, but then haven't we all with Christmas looming large!

Dear Nathan - I love those words of yours, 'deliciously dramatic':-)

As usual, you have got right to the heart of what I was attempting to say. Thank you for reading and for your inspiring words.

I wanted to quote the line;

'There’s still a me and a you,
but the ‘us’ is missing …'

But looking through the comments I can see that pretty much everyone else has so it makes things a bit awkward :P

Great poem, brings up bad times I've had with previous relationships when we've talked so much there's just nothing left to say. It's cold and lame and it works so well. :) [ That statement made sense in my head not sure if it makes that much sense in general though :] ]

I would agree with what the other people have said. That one line speaks volumes and I think it would resonate with any one who has had a relationship which, sadly, has to come to an end.

I'm waiting for a cherry to fall from the tree of wisdom onto this one Tina. This is great and as Val said, you are so good at this type of work; the nuances of human behaviour captured wonderfully (sometimes painfully) and accurate to the N'th degree. I can picture the characters!

I so apologise,LT. I did not notice this comment until today, and we have this marvellous system now that lets us know.

My belated thanks to you for reading, so empathetically.

Chris - thanks so much for looking this one up. I did rather like it myself and it is more than helpful to receive your comment and I greatly value it.
