‘Something came up.
Really sorry, my sweet...’
So came the message
with every bouquet,
most birthdays; even
our fifth anniversary...
We were supposed
to be going on that trip
to France, on Eurostar.
Went with Millie
instead, if you recall.
Had a whale of a time...
all that shopping –
an evening
at the folies bergers.
Your loss, not mine...
my philosophy.
Forgive me, won’t you,
if I smile...even though
smiling’s frowned upon
in places like this
I should imagine.
So what? I couldn’t
give a flying fig!
Only, I’ve just seen
the funny side; admiring,
as I was, the engraving
on your headstone...
and those lovely roses –
blood-red, of course.
I must say, it makes
quite a change – me
sending you flowers...
Yet, what goes around,
comes around, eventually,
and what more fitting
an epitaph could there be
than, ‘Something came up’,
as is blatantly obvious,
darling...it did.

knowing what to say can be hard, but saying it
with flowers as you have done so poetically in
this poem, can make all the difference.
By the way, I never expected the ending, it was
quite a surprise.
Thankyou for sharing Tina.
Jenny.

Thanks, Jenny. Yes, it is a bit of a suprise, I guess, to say the least;-)

Yes it reminds what imperfect beings we are and how things fray and depart.
Silver Spun Sand | February 2, 2012 - 16:55
It certainly does, Verdana. Many thanks for commenting and for the read;-)

little typo: folies bergere
Silver Spun Sand | February 2, 2012 - 17:57
Thanks, insert...on both counts;-)

I love reading a good positive poem, it's really refreshing. People can really get you down if you let them, but not here. I'll never get enough of hearing people say, 'Your loss, not mine!' Love it.

Hello SSS
Tina
Another good one I see. I liked the slightly mocking tone.
Much enjoyed.

That ending packs a real punch, Tina - made me chuckle! Love the reversal of roles too. A tale beautifully told as always. Well done on the cherries ;-)
