The thought of dying
doesn’t frighten me...
except, I can’t imagine
not actually existing.
Can’t get it through my head
that the seasons
will change without me.
That flowers and trees
will still grow –
fishes swim,
and aeroplanes fly.
That rain will still fall –
Cadbury make chocolate
and McDonalds
sell French-fries.
One could argue
nothing in this life
is guaranteed.
True enough.
In an infinite universe
anything is possible.
Wind could cease blowing.
The sun, moon and stars
decide not to shine.
Yet, all things being equal,
as long as the world
keeps spinning – kids
will always ask
the question, “Why?”
Will always splash in puddles,
write their names
on misted-up windows,
believe in ghosts...
and ever marvel
at the colours in a stone.

A tad philosophical, and a charming reminder of our immortality, but perphaps also our legacy. Margot

I should like to think so too, Margot. My thanks to you:-)

I enjoyed this, all is said, when all is said and done. I like the way you said it anyway, anne

Very philosophical, what brought this on?

p.s. unnecessary comma here:
'and McDonalds,
sell French-fries.'

Gosh, that was fast...are you Wonderwoman?!

Comma gone!! Actually, I noticed it earlier and thought, oh well, no one will notice. I should have known better;-)
As to what brought it on...the other day I was discussing the subject of an infinite universe with my fourteen year old grandson, who is Mr. Philosophy himself, I might add. And from that, this sprang...for what it's worth. So now you know.
My thanks to you, as always, Jennifer.

When all's said and done, anne, I much appreciate your reading and taking the trouble to comment. Thank you:-)

Actually Jennifer, he used to sub on ABC a while back. Not sure if his work is still here though. He has also been published in a poetry anthology, and really is quite something else, but then he is MY grandson after all;-)

Hi Tina. Really like this one. Your work seems to have such a natural feel to it that it's sometimes as if you are reading it to me ;-)
I particularly like the ideas in the last verse and for me this is my 'Thought Of The Day'
True enough.
In an infinite universe
anything is possible.
Thank you. :-)
PS Meant to say how much I enjoyed hearing where the inspiration came from. Perhaps I'm a poets head voyeur or something equally soon to be made illegal ;) lol

Gosh, Jupiter, I do hope not. They always ban the most enjoyable things, don't you think?
Hey...and thank you;-)

A very wise poem, well constructed and quite true to the mark. Yes, we are all mortal, and hope our brief time on this earth is meaningful to someone. Good work. Richard LP

My sincere thanks to you, Richard. Your words, more than appreciated.

Thank you for posting this poem Tina. It is truly beautiful. I was mesmerised when reading this poem.
The wisdom in this poem is captured with such delicate images, which is what makes it so powerful.
Well done.
Nathan.

The last stanza is brilliant - really bowled me over! It's a real thinker, Tina and that's why I love it so much ;)

My other half says I don't think very often, but he can always tell when I'm doing it;-)
Hopefully, I did have my thinking cap whilst writing this one. Glad it meant something to you Magic. Hope you have a good weekend;-)
