THE APPLE

from the ABC set Poems

Eat an apple every day,
is what my mother used to say.
They're packed with healing properties,
to the young and old,
they are nice in hot apple crumble,
for when it's really cold.

If you don't fancy cooking,
simply sit back and relax,
with a pint of home made cider,
fermented from the cask.
The alternative of cider, is apple juice instead,
it's flavour is quite sweet,
so be sure to clean your teeth.

The image of an apple is full of mystery,
from the moment Eve gave one to Adam,
but is that for real, or just a made up history?
In Greek and Roman mythology,
apples represent love and beauty,
I wonder if Cleopatra ate them,
because she was a cutie.

Jennifer, I think you are very naughty, me thinks instead of a cherry you are wanting an apple :)

Ha, Ha, Louise 178, you found me out!
Apples are being picked, the best time of the year for them,
so I thought I would write a poem about the harvest apple.
Jenny.

The first two verses are great, the last one needs a bit of work to my mind. However who am I to criticise a double cherry picker?

Hi Geoffrey,
Thanks for reading my poem, any comments are always welcome.
Jenny.

Enjoyed this immensely, Jennifer, especially the rhyming of 'beauty' and 'cutie'!

Hi Pia,
you would get on with my partner, it's his favourite fruit.
All he drinks is cider and coffee.
Jenny.

Highhat | October 3, 2010 - 18:39

I think mango is my favorite but I love all sorts of fruit. We have so many different kinds of apples here- I have a special kind I prefer to the others !!
pia ;)

skinner_jennifer | October 3, 2010 - 19:01

Yes I have a favourite, mine is either Pink Lady, or coxes.
Do you live anywhere near Copenhagen? It's just that I have
been there on the google map.

Highhat | October 3, 2010 - 19:22

I live in a town called Hillerød on a street named Østervang. Check it out. You may need to change the spelling to Hilleroed and Oestervang. Just north of Copenhagen 40km. My favourite apple is indigenous- Ingrid Marie- juicy and crunchy and sweet. They are small red apples. I like coxes as well ;)
hm have just had salad and wouldn't mind a piece of fruit. I'm going to go crazy at the fruit counter tomorrow ;D I do that once in a while, then I cut them up into chunks, take away peel and pips and put on a laaarrrggge plate and just munch away. I like to serve a plate for my son and his friends when they come by. Delicious ;)

Hi Pia,
I think I found your street. There's a path with a blue sign, saying, I think 57 to 85. Further down the road there
is a bus stop, passed the bus stop is a building that say's,
SKANSEKOLEN, with a sign that say's, HILLEROD KOMMUNE GVL
ENTREPRISE A/S. Don't know if I have it right, but do you
no, I went around Denmark and it is very clean, especially
Copenhagen, it looks very pretty.

Hi Jenny, I thought has you are the only kind person to comment on my work ha ha. I would do the same while I have chance to go on the computer ha ha.

I think it is a clever yet straight forward poem and loved it Jenny :)

Highhat | October 4, 2010 - 12:04

You found the right street- The sign with the numbers on it is the numbers of the stairways to our flats. Skanseskolen means Skanse School. Skole=school. And the 3rd sign is because they are building alterations on our balconies and making the whole area to a friendly green environment. Will be nice when they eventually are finished with all the excavating. It's a bit of a bother with the noise and fuss. It will be good for the kids and people who like to gather outside on benches. I like to sit on my balcony (I live on the 2nd floor)- we all have balconies- some flats are larger than mine- for families, dogs and grandparents ;D ha ha

Hi pretty rose,
thankyou so much for commenting on my poem, it's much
appreciated.
Jenny.

Hi Pia,
I bet it will be fantastic once the work is finished. They
definitely care about the enviroment in Denmark. We only
just seemed to be latching on to the enviromental issues,
in England, still better late than never.
Jenny.

Prettyrose | October 4, 2010 - 12:23

Its easy Jenny has your work is always a pleasure to read, its just some times I can never get time to comment on them :))))

Highhat | October 4, 2010 - 12:41

Hi Jen
I think it is important that the place where you live is nice and tidy and that the surroundings are a pleasant place to live outdoors as well as at home. The Housing Association does a lot for the tenants' closest environment. It's a pretty widespread philosophy a lot of places in this country. But our rent is pretty high too so I suppose they should use some money on us. ;D
pia

skinner_jennifer | October 4, 2010 - 14:43

Oh yes Pia I totally agree, if your rent is high, they
should definitely use the money for your benefit.
We have been lucky this year with the council tax, as they
decided to cap it, so we are paying the same amount as last
year, which is unusual, because normally they put it up
quite a bit.
I used to live in a Housing Association flat, when I was a
single parant back in the 80s. I loved my flat, it was nice
because it was my first home, that belonged entirely to me.
I had so much fun, going out and buying furniture and nick
nacks, it was all second hand, but as far as I was concerned, it was all mine, wonderful feeling that.
Jenny.

Highhat | October 4, 2010 - 18:15

I've moved about a bit Jen and for the first time in my life I really feel at home and ready to settle down. Maybe because I have all my mother's furniture and small nick nacks that it feels like a home. I put my own touch to it as well and I am very comfortable ;)It is also a very pleasant area and I love the people around here contrary where I lived before.
pia ;)

skinner_jennifer | October 5, 2010 - 08:26

That's nice Pia, it's good to feel comfortable where
you live.
Jenny.
