CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

from the ABC set Poems

Leave the past alone,
my mother said to me,
it's never the way you remember it,
so just let it be,

but when so many memories,
come flooding back to me,
I have to find old friends,
because they hold the key.

Childhood memories make us what we are today,
nobody can take those thoughts of you away,
cowboys and indians we would love to play,
at the back of Woolworths,
with crates they left out each day.

Change came in the 60s,
it happened very fast,
the cottage that we lived in,
was condemned and pulled down fast,

I was still so young,
when we had to move away,
about eight or nine,
there about I'd say,

no more roller skating,
we now lived on a hill,
the one friend that I missed,
her name was Jill.

The new house that we moved to,
It was'nt really so bad,
once I settled in,
I didn't feel so sad,

we had a big long garden,
with roses in full bloom,
my bedroom was a double,
suddenly I had loads of room,

the garden led into the woods,
where I would love to play,
making dens and tree houses,
picking bluebells in May.

Though those days have now long gone,
the photos I still see,
suddenly those memories,
come flooding back to me.

Thanks julie,

yes they were special times, I must have been about
seven at the time, we used to go to the cinema on a
saturday morning, watch a western, then go and act it
out in the afternoon, good fun times.

Thankyou for your great comment, it's always
appreciated.

This was a very moving peice for me, mainly because I think it applies to everyone in a different way. We all have childhood memories, whether they're good ones or bad ones, they stay with you. They make you who you are today!

'Childhood memories make us what we are today'

I can't emphasise enough how true this line is.

PS- I'll be shocked if this doesn't get a cherry, it's worthy of one in my opinion.

You have spoken about this garden leading into the woods before in a conversation we had and I find it a tantalizing image Jenny, full of mystery. Really enjoyed this.:-)
