Drifting across the moors,
wandering – seeking shelter,
a carpet of moss gives a feeling
of engulfed danger, you become
weary...with every slight of step.
The distant sea calls – through
the far menacing atmosphere...
thick – hazy fog devouring all,
the heath provides no shelter for travellers,
risky – precarious, it beckons the impulsive,
but if by chance the sea to spy...
white washed cottages perched up high,
appearing to gaze at a maddening cry...
that shows no compassion for the meek,
the cove sits weather beaten,
storm tossed fishing boats...
set adrift by ravenous – turbulent sea,
her appetite for destruction lingers
long through the endless night...
waves smash, slam jagged rocks...
showing no mercy...wild – tempestuous,
as one who is malcontent and enraged...
then as clouds break and drift away,
the Sun rises over the picturesque bay,
two strangers their conversation stilted,
but glad to be sheltered from the storm,
back by a log fire in the fisherman's home.

Love the use of dashes and ellipses, Jenny - they work really well. You've got some beautiful and haunting images in this one! Well done!

yes, very evocative imagery, and I did like so much the contrast when the clouds clear, and the picturesqueness appears once more, – combined with the cosy home!

This is so very atmospheric, Jenny and if it were a piece of music it might very well be 'Fingal's Cave'...a tune which was running through my mind whilst reading it.
Very much enjoyed.

Hi Rhiannon,
glad you could pick up on the wild venture over the
moors, then to the cosy fisherman's cottage.
Thankyou for taking the time to read, always
appreciated.

Hello Tina,
you know, I've never heard that piece of music, you
mentioned, 'Fingal's Cave'...so now I'm going to go
on the internet and see if I can find it, I'll come
back and let you know what I think.
I feel very honoured that you should hear a piece of
music, while reading this poem and I'm very grateful
to you for letting me know.
Thankyou so much for reading and commenting, it's
always appreciated.

Hi maisie,
glad I could stir up a long walk over the moors
for you, Wuthering Heights comes to mind, when
I think of the moors.
At least you could go in your imagination, which
can be just as much fun and safer.
Hope you're keeping warm tonight.
Thankyou for reading and leaving a comment, much
appreciated.
Jenny.

Dear Tina,
have just come from the internet and listened to
that piece of music by Mendelssohn, I have heard
this piece before, but never realised it was called,
Fingal's Cave. It was so stirring and I feel so
happy that you would consider that music with my
poem.
I have now got it in my head, that one day I would
like to go to this cave, it looks amazing and so
wild, something I must do at some point.
Thankyou so much for introducing me to this music
and this place.
Jenny.

This is very atmospheric Jenny. I felt myself transported to the scenery so well described as it is. You have done a really cool job on this one.
Just a little tweak- I'd look at the use of the word menace which you have used twice- it seems to repeat where it shouldn't. Have a look at it and see if you can find one word to substitute it with just the one place- then it will be perfect.
Hope you don't mind me saying so?
;)Pia

Hi Pia,
thanks for reading this poem and letting me know you
found it atmospheric, I really like that.
I can now see exactly what you mean and I'm grateful
that you let me know. I've now changed menace to
danger.
Thanks again.

Jenny Yet again I find myself tardy. All the previous comments admire this and rightly so; an evocative subject expressed in unstrained poetic language. The imagery conjures the atmosphere and puts me right in the saltiness and the wind.
Enjoy those thoroughly deserved cherries ;)
skinner_jennifer | January 7, 2012 - 22:03
Hi scratch,
yes I always enjoy the cherries when I get them,
as I also appreciate your kind comment.
I'm so pleased you could feel the atmosphere in
this one, it was what I hoped to convey.
Thankyou for reading and letting me know.
