Daydreaming

from the ABC set Poems

I long to walk down leafy lanes
where thatched cottages stand so proud,
open fields call to me
peace...quiet open spaces,
with just the sound of
cattle grazing - birds singing
and a gentle breeze blowing,

perhaps I could wander along a
winding road to the sea,
smell that salt, sea air...
as childhood memories come
flooding back to me,

I yearn for the sounds of nature,
to lie wistfully under
a Summer sky,
to picnic by a river...
no care would I have for time,
but to rapture in this waking Eden.

This is beautiful, Jenny...but sometimes the wide open spaces can be a bit too wide and open. Take this morning, for instance...I was hoovering upstairs.
When I came down into the kitchen, door ajar because of the heat, there was a heron standing right in front of me, contemplating whether to come in or not. One scream from me, and he was off, thank goodness. We have two ponds in our garden, and I had already chased it away earlier. They are amazingly beautiful birds, but I'm afraid after they eat your goldfish, they do lose some of their allure.

Anyway, back to your poem. I really did enjoy it, and the last stanza, especially;-)

Hi Tina,

I cannot imagine coming face to face with a heron,
they are such big birds, almost prehistoric looking,
especially when in flight, I think you were very
brave. Yes I know about them pinching the fish, our
neighbour has a pond, he has to keep it covered with
netting, although it takes away from the naturalness
of the pond.

Thankyou for reading and letting me know your thoughts. Let's hope that Heron has had such a fright
he won't come back.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

Jenny.

jenny! The second line is a little long!
Sticks out too much, apart from that a lovely pastural piece,

You're on a roll at the moment Jenny - must be the nice weather! Very nice and a lovely last line.

evocative, and peaceful

lovely dreamlike rhythm to this. well done - I really enjoyed it

So beautifully expressed Jenny. I loved it. It made me think back when enjoying walks was such a natural and easy thing to do. Now I am a bit slow to go far away and just wander about- but it brings back wonderful memories reading this. I've really had a great share of nature and I am so glad you reminded me of it. Thank you very much.
By the way I saw a heron on a walk recently - yes they are kind of prehistorical, aren't they?

Hi maisie,

thankyou for your feedback, I understand what you
mean about the second line, only this poem is kind
of personal to me at the moment and the description
I gave was how I felt, but thankyou anyway for your
thoughts and I'm glad you enjoyed the rest of it.

Hi coral,

it's so great to know you liked my poem. I suppose it
could have something to do with the weather. I do hope the sun is shining for you today.

Thankyou for reading and such a nice comment.

Jenny.

Hello Rhiannonw,

Wow! what a great way to describe my poem, I love
those two words, 'evocative and peaceful,' just how
I like to describe this poem.

It's very kind of you to read and let me know your
thoughts, thankyou.

Jenny.

Hi insert,

glad you liked this poem, I was daydreaming while I
wrote it, which gave me the inspiration.

Thankyou for your kind words and for reading.

Hope you're having a sunny day.

Jenny.

Hi Pia,

isn't it just wonderful how poems can evoke all those
memeories from long ago? I'm glad I could evoke those
memories for you and I know exactly what you mean
about not getting around like you used too, but then
we have our memories don't we? that's the most
important thing.

I remember walking along a winding road to the sea,
all I could hear were birds and sea breezes, simple
bliss, don't you think?

Anyway enough of this daydreaming. Thankyou for
reading and your lovely newsy comment, much appreciated.

Have a sunny day.

Lovely poem Jenny! I used to walk down a lane to the sea when I was little, through cottages then fields and sometimes buffalo! Thank you for this nice reading because I miss the countryside. K

skinner_jennifer | July 5, 2011 - 11:26

Hello Kahdai,

I know what you mean about missing the countryside,
I too miss it desperately, but I do try to go there
in my mind, which does help to a degree.

Thankyou for reading and letting me know your
thoughts, it's always good to know others out there
share the same feelings as I do.

Hope you are having a sunny, peaceful day.

Jenny.

Hi Jennifer, I'm missing your story telling so popped over to poetry to see what you've been up to. This one took me back to my spiritual home of Loch Lomond, as well as long summer days on the shores of The Clyde.

skinner_jennifer | July 6, 2011 - 17:28

Hi there oldpesky,

sorry about the story, I just seem to be having a
mental block, I can't make up my mind whether I want
to end it and go onto pastures new, or whether to
continue it and go with the flow. You see when I
started it, I had an end in mind, but it's just
getting to the end that's the problem.

Anyway I'm glad I could stir some memories for you with this poem.

It sounds wonderful your spiritual home. I went to
Loch Lomond back in the early 70s, when we toured
around Scotland, it was a wonderful holiday, we
ended up in Oban and stayed in a flat, for three days, I shall never forget that holiday.

Thankyou so much for reading and the great comment.
I will really try hard to concentrate on the story.
Thankyou for the nudge again.

Jenny.
