Mysterious Minstrel
with harlequin hat,
Sweet sounds of the forest I hear...
as I move with continuous motion,
green trousers he wore...
below patchwork jacket,
with penny whistle he magically performed
reminiscence of times past,
I kneel before him...
put coins in his hat,
"thankyou," he then said from beneath his beard,
"the money's for my old black cat..."
given choice I would remain...
eyes fixed observation clear,
but sadly I must take my leave
for there are timely matters to attend.

nicely historical

Thanks maisie,
this happened today in town. This guy was dressed as
a minstrel, he performed an amazing piece of Bach,
on the penny whistle. I could have stood there all
day watching and listening to him, but sadly had to
go shopping.
Just thought I would explain. But thankyou so much
for your great comment, historical was what I was
trying to achieve.
Thanks again.
Jenny.

I don't remember you putting any money in my cap in St Ives?

Hi ScoZen,
Ah! well you see, that's probably because I couldn't
get to you, through the crowds that were watching you. 'He, he!'
Thanks for the comment.

Has magical feel to it, like being lost in time for a moment, much enjoyed.
skinner_jennifer | May 14, 2011 - 12:24
Hi Pia,
it truely was a great experience, I still can't stop
thinking about him today, it was just so different,
he actually brought a tear to my eye, while I was
watching, had to wipe it away very quickly though,
for fear of embarressment.
Thanks for the comment and for reading.

Hi shoe,
You are only too right there, I was lost in time, I
think that's why I shed a tear. I don't always give
money out easily, but this guy was so up my street
and different, that I thought he deserved the money,
with the effort he'd made. If I closed my eyes, I
could imagine being in a castle grounds, surrounded
by trees and grass, it was a truely wonderful experience.
Thankyou for reading and your comment, always much
appreciated.

I agree with shoe... found this to be really magical, mysical and ...other things that begin with'm' (can't think of a third :/ )
felt like I was wandering through a weird canival. Also loved the great opening
"Mysterious Minstrel
with harlequin hat,"
nice :)
..ooh, how about magnificent!

Nice submission Jenny.
I'm a hopeless watcher/admirer of buskers and living near York there is no shortage of them around the Minster on the odd occasion that I visit.
One observation if I may Jenny?
Perhaps save explicit explanations of the piece for personal messages to familiar co-writers or those who specifically request them, somehow reading your comment to Maisie et al. took a little of the burnish away.
But a super effort and thoroughly enjoyable
Lovely submission,
Scratch.
skinner_jennifer | November 17, 2011 - 10:08
Hi Scratch,
I know exactly what you mean and I'm sorry if I was
too explicit with my explanations, it can I agree
pull the reader away from the magic of the poem, I
will try and think more cleary about how a comment
comes across in future.
Thankyou for reading and leaving such a kind message,
it's only with the help of others, can I learn to
improve.

A lovely mystical poem but also for me it has a carnival flavour with the mention of a patchwork jacket and a harlequin hat. Once again, for me,it conjures up an image of a coat with tails and a high harlequin hat and I imagine him walking and playing his penny whistle with laughing children following behind...a bit reminiscent of the Pied Piper!
Much enjoyed.

Hi Moya,
you are spot on with your description, he's often
in town and draws quite a crowd, especially the
young children who become mesmerized by him.
I just have to stop and watch, it makes such a
difference to the guitar players, though they are
good too.
I do love your comments, they always give me a
smile.
Thankyou.
Jenny.
