A NEAR ESCAPE

from the ABC set Poems

I stood in the garden
looking up at the sky
as hundreds of starlings
they went flying by,

a kaleidoscope of shapes
enveloping the air
I thought it was amazing
till they pooped in my hair,

so when it's said and done
if you'll pardon the pun
I stand here and sigh
thank god it wasn't my eye.

Thanks Pia,

apart from the poop, it was an amazing sight, to
see all those starlings making shapes in the sky.

Thanks for reading and your comment which is always
welcome.

Thanks for the kind words Magic, now I look back on
it, was kind of funny.

I wonder if it's lucky to be pooped on by a Starling?

Thanks for reading.

Good morning Jenny

Nice little ditty to start my day. Not that you being pooped on brightens me up. Although I know you seen the funny side too.

It terms of form the rhythm lost it slightly and the last stanza hasa different rhyming scheme from the previous two. I'm sure you could tighten them up if you wanted too, but I hope you don't mind if I offer a couple of suggestions which keep to the rhythm and rhyme of the first stanza, as I've enjoyed the images so much.

I stood in the garden
looking up at the sky
as hundreds of starlings
they went flying by,

kaleidoscope of shapes
enveloping the air
though it was amazing
they pooped in my hair,

but when all's said and done
as I stand here and sigh
I thank our god above
it wasn't my eye.

Really hope you don't mind

Been there, had that, yeuk!

skinner_jennifer | March 14, 2011 - 19:19

Oh dear! well I'm glad I'm not the only one Sooz006.
There were absolutely hundreds of the birds flying
around, our garden is covered in starling poo, still
never mind, just need some rain to wash it away.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

Neat and funny, Jenny. I once got shat on by a seagull. I was absolutely covered in stinky stuff. It was like someone emptying a bucket over me. Talk about 'bombs away', I would never have believed there was so much crap in those things. I think watching Starlings is amazing. You can see a fantastic display on the Somerset levels.

Thanks for giving me a good laugh.

Well all I can say sue, is that it is definitely
good luck to get it from seagulls, I had it once
while sunbathing on the beach under a rock face
down in Cornwall, luckly though it landed on my
arm so that wasn't so bad.

Thanks for reading and commenting, glad I could
give you a laugh, that was my aim, pardon the pun!

Thanks Jenny, I meant to say I really liked your description: a kaleidoscope of shapes

This is great, Jenny. And I have had a 'near miss' situation, many times. I too loved your 'kaleidoscope of shapes.' Well done;-)

Hi Tina,

thanks so much for reading this piece and the nice
comment, luckily I think they have found places to
roost, my partner said that's why they do this air
display.

Have a great day.

Jenny.
