OCTOBER MAGIC

from the ABC set Poems

Autumns finally on its way,
Octobers nearly here,
some people say they love Summer,
but this is my favourite time of the year.

Frosty mornings and shortening days,
spur us on to get things done.
All around preparations,
are being made for the cold winter nights to come.

Many frogs and insects,
begin to disappear,
as they go into hibernation,
for the coldest time of the year.

The Hawthorn and the rose-hip bushes,
are stripped of their harvest by the birds,
October is the time for mushroom picking,
walking the forest's and the woods.

The golden rays of autumn sunshine,
are almost on their way,
"Watchout!" You just might see a squirrl,
collecting nuts to hide away.

You can't help but open your eyes,
to the wonderful world of nature,
when your walking at my favourite time of the year,
yes walking in October.

Thankyou shoe, so glad you see what I see.
Jenny.

JoseHdz | September 29, 2010 - 18:49

a favorite time for all poets, perhaps.. pleasure to read: smooth flow..

cheers.

Highhat | September 29, 2010 - 19:00

Yes a very atmospheric poem. I liked it- autumn is a time of beauty in nature- all the golden colours and the brisk walks in the forest- you are quite right
;)pia

skinner_jennifer | September 29, 2010 - 19:22

Hi JoseHdz,
Yes totally agree, a wonderful time of the year for
poets, also for walking and getting inspiration.
Jenny.

skinner_jennifer | September 29, 2010 - 19:26

Hi Pia,
Thankyou so much for your kind words, doesn't it just
make you want to go walking in the forest, that's
what I plan to do this weekend.
Jenny.

Highhat | September 29, 2010 - 19:39

I like treading on the dead leaves in the forest- it sounds as though you are walking on crisps- I don't like making a noise in the forest- love the quietude- but just a couple of leaves ;)

Kahdai | September 29, 2010 - 19:45

Ooh thanks I now look form=ward to the cold weather I usually dread,! yet agree it is a magical time of mystery! K

skinner_jennifer | September 29, 2010 - 19:52

Yes Pia I totally agree, treading the forest, just
being able to hear the natural sounds is so wonderful.
Isn't it wonderful how people will say, 'hello' when
you walk in the country, woods or forest, unlike when
your in town, nobody speaks to anybody. In the country
you meet such nice gentle people who walk for pleasure, or walking their dogs.
Jenny.

skinner_jennifer | September 29, 2010 - 19:55

Hi Kahdai,
Hope I have inspired you to go for a walk this weekend, glad you got the picture.
The magic of October.
Jenny.

Highhat | September 29, 2010 - 19:56

Yes its lovely when they greet you with a big smile. It is as though you have something to share- the wonders of nature- the sounds, the smell and the sight. Yes wonderful I love going for walks- sleep well at night also- lots of fresh air.

skinner_jennifer | September 29, 2010 - 20:10

That is so true, I always sleep better when I have
been out for a walk. You cannot beat fresh air.
Jenny.

Highhat | September 29, 2010 - 20:24

Sure can't- ;)
pia

Kahdai | September 29, 2010 - 21:11

Aah me too, maybe its the fresh air makes people feel cheerful enough to be smiling & say 'morning! :)

MistakenMagic | September 29, 2010 - 21:15

I realised autumn was finally here when I saw my cold breath rise in front of me for the first time in months and months! Really love this poem, Jenny - as Shirley said, it captures Autumn perfectly!

iDrew | September 29, 2010 - 21:45

Mushroom picking!
That's all I'm saying on that subject.

Really enjoyed reading this but I don't want winter to come. I don't like winter, all big coats and red sniffy noses.

Hi pia,
wish I could take you to our local forest, it's
absolutely beautiful, but then all forest's are.

don't know what went wrong with my computer there,
sending message twice. Anyway Kahdai, I agree with
you about the fresh air, but I also think it's because
people are more relaxed, away from the hussle and
bussle.
Jenny.

skinner_jennifer | September 30, 2010 - 09:06

Thankyou for your kind words magic.
Yes I know what you mean about your cold breath rising,
especially in the early mornings.
Jenny xx

skinner_jennifer | September 30, 2010 - 09:14

Hello IDrew,
Thanks for your comment, I know what you mean about the
winter, but for me there is the colours of this time of
the year. Its a time for being cozy with loved ones by
the fire, for planning for the garden for next years crop of
food, looking forward to Hallowene, telling stories.
But then that is just my opinion.
Jenny.

skinner_jennifer | September 30, 2010 - 09:16

Hi Fatboy74,
I am so glad you enjoyed this poem, even if your not a fan
of Autumn. Thanks for the comment.
Jenny.

Highhat | September 30, 2010 - 10:11

Hi Jenn- I'd love to take you for a walk here as well. You are kind- and yes forests are just the way they should be - a place to experience nature and the quietude and calm. I don't like winter either but >I know what you mean about everything being cosy at home and indoors. I do like christmas though !! All I need is a fireplace in this concrete jungle!!
pia ;D

skinner_jennifer | September 30, 2010 - 11:33

Ah yes a real fire there's nothing like it, we used to have
one, but now just have to be thankful for the electric one,
it's got one of those wheels that go round inside with a
bulb, gives the effect of flames. But on Hallowene we always
have a fire outside, eat filled jacket potatoes, with bacon
and yummie cheese. I love to eat chestnuts off the fire too.
Let's just hope the weather keeps fine, not to good if it
rains.
Jenny.

Highhat | September 30, 2010 - 11:51

We can be sure that it will rain but I hope your Halloween is sanctified. Sounds scrumptious with the food and the fire outside. Would be too cold to do that here- we, at least some, just hollow out a pumpkin and that's sort of it I think. It's very cold here! brrr- nice with the electric fire- would be cosy in my flat too but I have central heating and the electricty bill would be immense if I had one of those. Electricity is expensive here-
pia;)

skinner_jennifer | September 30, 2010 - 12:52

Yikes! I can't spell, just noticed I spelt Halloween wrong,
see I told you your spelling was better than mine Pia.
I know what you mean about expensive electric bills, we don't have it on all the time, we do have central heating,
but if me and my partner are watching television, say on a
Saturday night, it is cosy in the winter.
I think that's great hollowing out a pumpkin, I have never
done that, I would love to have a go, maybe I will this
year.
Jenny.

Geoffrey | October 1, 2010 - 08:32

Liked this one! My turn now, was the squirrl spelling deliberate? My grandfather used to talk of them this way. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, not here I'm afraid, mine get grilled.

Kahdai | October 1, 2010 - 10:39

Jenny everyone is nicer in the countryside am stuck in city now!

Highhat | October 1, 2010 - 13:32

Jenny- you hollow out the pumpkin and make a zig zaw lid (in reverse order) and put a little candle inside- a table candle maybe- one that can burn for a few hours and then you put it outside your front door- looks really nice during the dark evenings and grey days. When I go for walks along the streets where there are ordinary houses it looks very pretty if they have lighted pumpkins outside around Halloween ;)
cheers
pia;)

skinner_jennifer | October 1, 2010 - 16:17

Hi Geoffrey,
Have to confess it was a spelling mistake, it doesn't
matter how many times I check for spelling mistakes, there
is always one that I miss.
Glad you enjoyed it though.
Jenny.

skinner_jennifer | October 1, 2010 - 16:21

Hi Kahdai, totally agree with you, although I don't live in
the city, just the suburbs, but nobody really bothers with
anyone around here, apart from the neighbours on either side. Jenny.

skinner_jennifer | October 1, 2010 - 16:24

Hi Pia,
Thankyou so much for your information on how to hollow out
a pumpkin. The problem round where I live, is that we don't
have a front garden, I'm not sure if the pumpkin would
remain out side my door, but do you no what? I will make one
this year definitely, I have decided. Thankyou Pia.

skinner_jennifer | October 1, 2010 - 16:28

Hi Geoffrey,
me again, chestnuts are nice done on the barbecue aswell.
Jenny.

darkenwolf | October 4, 2010 - 18:05

Brilliant Jenny, you can feel the chill in the air and the crunch of leaves under foot as you read it.
;)

skinner_jennifer | October 5, 2010 - 15:10

Hi darkenwolf,
thankyou so much for your comment, it's very much
appreciated.
Jenny.

well-wisher | October 22, 2010 - 11:56

It's a good description of Autumn but I think that it lacks a proper rhythm, many of the lines don't scan.

I usually sing my poems in my head to a tune in order to get the syllable count right or I write in a specific meter like iambic pentameter. All the same, it does conjure up the Autumn quite well and clearly expresses your love of nature.

skinner_jennifer | November 28, 2010 - 15:38

Thankyou well-wisher,
I shall take on board what you said.

Jenny.
