POND LIFE

from the ABC set Poems

Wings hover drifting over dark liquid,
devoid of colour boatmen move
with a continuous motion,
ever searching feelers
tentatively touching,
needing nutrition.

The winged one stops
at the well of life,
she settles still at last,
resting seconds pass,
her brightly coloured wings
resplendent, glistening
in the summer sun.

After an interval of rest,
she continues her flutter
dwelling close to the
life giving liquid.

The pond so still
supporting individual
creatures and plants,
motionless dark liquid turbid, unclear
yet at the same time aesthetic.

Plant life intermingles
swaying like a dance,
as carp move snake like
occasionally rising to the surface,
bubbles pass from sight
then once again disappearing
below the surface.

A flight of extremely small
unknown winged insects,
move lightly across the surface,
as the dragon fly searches
once again for life giving substance.

Gosh, Jenny...you've made me long for summer with your lovely poem. We have a small pond in our garden which is undergoing a major 'overhaul' as I speak. Just had tons of sand delivered this morning, and a new liner, and hopefully, this spring it will be full of 'pond life'once again...and not full of mud, as it is at present, and a rather disgruntled man in waders, not quite knowing where to start next!!

Wow! Tina,

thankyou so much for the comment, that is great
that you are having your pond overhauled, it's
lovely to have a pond, especially in the summer,
I could sit and watch the wildlife all day.

Thankyou again for reading and your comment.

Hello Skinny dipper.
I visit a secret pond nearby every so often.
Exactly as you portray it.
Must go, I've just been bitten by something...

Like all have said Jenny takes you right where most want to be right now. My poem late afternoon wass from a memory of being on a field trip aged eleven and writing down our findings of what we had found searching through a pond. Great minds... ATB FB

well-wisher | January 30, 2011 - 23:54

I like the way you point the lens of your poetry at nature, like a camera; impartially; just showing things as they happen and, just like a nature documentary, your poem is inviting me into a wonderful miniature world full of drama and beauty.

You're poem also reminds me a bit of Zen buddhist poetry. Each verse has a haiku like quality; capturing the moment; showing rather than telling
but, at the same time, saying something profound about life and interdependency.

As a poetic nature photograph I think that this is very accomplished. I can see everything, the light and the color and the movement very vividly.

It is very visual, though; like a masterly painting of nature with every small visual detail faithfully represented but without any sounds or smells.

Mind you, the absence of sounds also gives me a sense of the quietness of the scene.

I also like the way you capture a feeling of real time passing in the poem through your descriptions of movement and stillness.

I think I also like how you give great importance to the smallest of things like the "flight of extremely small unknown winged insects" reminding us of how important even the smallest life forms are.

There are so many commendable things within this poem but one thing it shows is that you have a particular special talent for painting (in words) moving photo-realistic (and yet impressionistic also) portraits of nature.

Re-reading it. I also like the way stillness is broken but reforms like the water which is disturbed by the carp moving "snake like" and I like the subtle way that lighting (just as in the visual arts) is used to indicate mood. It reminds me somewhat of a Monet water-lily painting.

Dear well-wisher,

what can I say to your wonderful comment, I feel so
moved and humbled. You have made a lover of nature
very happy. I am only a beginner at writing, I think
there are so many good writers on this ABC Tales,
that I cannot even begin to compare myself to others,
who have much more talent than myself.

I have always enjoyed reading and writing, but only
in the past for my own private enjoyment, I am a
complete novice, when it comes to writing for others
to read. But when I get to read a comment, such as
yours it gives me hope that perhaps I am doing
something right.

Thankyou so much again, you will never no how much
your words mean to me.

Jenny.

Hi! just catching up
and reading this gorgeous
nature moving beauty poem
Of colour and images.Flows
just like well-wisher and other's
say the way you have brought in everything
and movements and stillness and calm of it.
Yes,definitely meditation which can be used
to soft music, amnd relax the person and imagine
all of these things and bring in fountains.Gently
massage the shoulders and feather tip the forehead,
relaxing the person of worries and anxieties calm music. Sit them in a chair gradually talk to them
to relax shoulders neck bottom legs massaging lightly. Of which I did one on here called I think relaxation. They may nod off. It works. Thanks. And we have pond in the park fish nearly gone Carp lot's of flotsam or moss on water running water spring.

Hello julie,

you have certainly got the right image here, that is
exactly how I see sitting by a pond, somewhere to
meditate and forget all about the worries of the
day, all problems seem to drift away.
I too love the thought of a massage, gently taking
away all those aches and pains, with the calm music
playing.

Thankyou so much for the great compliment julie,
you are very kind. You take care and enjoy the rest
of your weekend.

Jenny. xx

Thanks lovely reply, course
I am talking from being able to
do this after having so much done.
But anyone can do this but must be
gentle touch and of course one goes
behind the back of the chair the person
is sitting in and starts etc. I once had
cramp in my toes way back, daughter young then
massage bit rough it went and locked them again.
Shoulders are the salt cellars, place hands and finger tipp gently out bringing in all roses butterflies fountains anything. Some used to stand up in a line at music group and do shoulders and also
children now relaxing ways. Not to rock music!!Soft non speaking one. So just try it? I have tapes from past, apart from tripping up three steps bedroom arms full grazed knee and big toe shaken, he just gone out. Better now. How's you you could put this on a tape of soft music and talk all the lovely things in it, there? you'd be made top of the hits.
Have a good week-end. Daughters taking me weds; kindly to see "The Black Swan" Ballerina nice never get pictures or flicks used to say. Last week "The Kings Speech" brilliant but adds: bit long before film.
Have a good week-end.
Neighbour's cat been in "Green Eyes" he is little love cries looks around talk him yes, been on two laps
likes to jump up stop the computer going? Take a quite a few photos, and loves look out window.Bit of
Siamese in him. Makes me laugh so much, mine never have a cat in. Poem "Green Eyes" done magic cat even
if not been too good comes sits on wall, now proved
different cries like a baby mean things true!
julie hope your ok.
