To wait and linger long...the
daily pause of waiting salmon.
If gods should choose to release
the bounty of their abundance,
as twilight tilts the berries free,
to plummet into the well below,
aloft to follow not far behind...
a tasty morsel – a wealth of
knowledge to behold...there are
secrets here to unfold, for as a
father then bestowed his many
journeys the secrets of the world,
when gods yield the promise
of the prose...great mastery
shall then be free to evolve,
the significant wisdom within,
the nourishment a kernel so to begin,
many a poet to aspire with pleasure,
then when darkness approaches,
dreams consume...aspirations – desire,
take form in the written word, now done.

Hi Pia,
I'm so glad you liked this poem. It's a tale of well,
that is under the sea and is a source of the River
Shannon in Ireland. It tells of the salmon, that go
to feed on the nuts, that fall from the Hazel trees
that grow above the well.
Legend has it, that the father of all the salmon,
when first going to sea, is drawn to the magical
well, all his journeys he instills in all the other
salmon, so that when they eat the hazel nuts, they
are the recipients of all knowledge.
The sacred hazelnut is said to be the food of the
gods and gave people that ate the fish or the nuts,
the knowledge of aspirations and so on....
There's a lot more to the story, but it would take
a long time to explain, so I hope that has given you
a better insight into the poem.
Anyway Pia, thankyou so much for reading, always
appreciate your feedback.
Jenny.

Those first two lines are a brilliant opening, Jenny! Really loved this and you finish it off perfectly with that last line. Well done!

I hope you don't mind me saying this Jenny, but in the year and a half I have been on this site, your poetry has improved (for me) more than anyone's. i don't know if you are blitzing your reading, I know you read a lot on here, but you are using words in poems beautifully now and are making really good choices with word placement and creating clear internal rhythms that help the poem move along as it should - you know what sounds right. Loved this.

Well FB, I'm speechless and really over the moon
with your comment. Yes I have been reading a lot,
but I have definitely taken on board, the advice that
others, including your self have given me. Since
coming on abc tales, I have picked up so much information, it's almost like going back to school
to learn and everyone has been so kind on here.
Anyway I really appreciate what you have said and
I'm so glad that you like this poem.
Thankyou so much for your comment and support.
Jenny.

Dear Tina,
It's so kind of you to come back and let me know
you thought it was cherry worthy, ofcourse I'm
over the moon with the cherries, what a wonderful
surprise to come back too.
Jenny.

Good afternoon cherry pickers,

Hello Jenny, lovely poem; such a lilt almost like a meandering stream taking us from one fulfillment to another. In fact, much like the sing-song melody John Masefield used in his poems. Cheers from Richard LP

Good morning Richard,
just read your lovely comment and will have to look
up John Masefield, I've never read his work.
I'm really grateful that you read this poem and
loved your description of the meandering stream,
Thankyou.

Sorry to come to this late, Jenny - haven't been around as much recently for various reasons - but had to tell you this is simply brilliant! Well done you.
Hope you are in reasonable health. Take care and keep this `purple patch' going....

I arrived here on the back of Jenny leaving a comment on some of my work -
Although, at first, I felt duty bound to read some of your work, (this being the first piece I clicked on), I will now say that I only wish to be able to write something that flows so brilliantly, and evokes so much in so few words, as this does.
It is as cool and still and calm as the water.
I shall read on when not at work!
Steve.

Good evening Steve,
I was over the moon with your comment on this poem.
There is so much to read on abc tales, it would take
forever to read everything, so I do appreciate you
taking the time to view this piece.
I look forward to reading more of your work too,
and thankyou for reading mine.
