A SPIRITUAL MOMENT AT THE BEACH

from the ABC set Poems

A bird with a broken wing I saw,
while walking along the seashore,
as I knelt down in wet sand,
I let it feel the warmth of my hand,

I stroked the wings of the injured bird,
while soft breezes I attentively heard,
but after a while black clouds did abound,
I looked around no help could be found,

I couldn't leave my feathered friend,
I knew it was dying I'd stay till the end,
then the wind became a gale,
the waves came crashing,
no yachts did sail,

I waited and waited the rain came down,
a figure came running as I looked around,
a veterinary surgeon he told me he was,
I asked, "what could have been the cause?"

"lots of birds get washed upon the beach,
some we help, but others we can't reach,"
I sadly said my goodbye,
then I looked up to the sky,
"take care of this bird I discovered today,
keep it warm and safe this I pray."

I do hope he managed to survive and make a full recovery. Thought provoking poem.

A very tender and beautiful poem, Jenny. I hope the bird made it safely home, wherever that may be!

Thankyou oldpesky,

but I'm afraid the poor bird died, I stayed with it
until the end, the vet took it away in a box, yes
it was very sad.

Thankyou for reading and such a nice comment.

Jenny.

Hi Magic,

I was just telling oldpesky, the poor bird died
I'm afraid, it didn't stand a chance really, it
happened back many years ago now, but it's strange
how this one event stayed with me all these years.

It's kind of you to read and leave such a nice
comment.

Thankyou,

Jenny.

I thought this was a good poem and a good story. I liked 'soft breezes' as a representation of life and 'black clouds' for death.

You were very kind to stand by that bird, even after the weather started to turn nasty, just like St Francis.

skinner_jennifer | March 29, 2011 - 17:09

Hi well-wisher,

you always manage to cheer me up with your wonderful
words of wisdom, I never thought of the soft breezes
as representing life and the dark clouds representing
death, but you never know, you could actually have
been right.

Thankyou again for your kind comment and for reading.

Jenny.

Well-wisher couldn't have put it better, Jenny;-)

A lovely poem, and you should be very proud, not only of this, but of what you did.

Hi Jenn I agree with all the comments. What a deed. You are a true heroine and such a kind person. I am so sad to hear that the bird died but maybe it was for the best, a wild bird with a broken wing :(

Hi Jenny, this was unusual and interesting and you certainly did your good deed for Mother Nature. I can only say it sounds in-character with the sort of person you seem to be - very kind.

Hi Pia,

thankyou for reading this poem, I would never have
left that bird on its own to die, I just did what
I thought was right, the poor thing was shaking so
much. It was very kind of you to say such nice words,
and I'm very thankful for you reading and your
comment.

Do you know Sue, the amount of stuff that got washed
up on the beach during that storm was awful. There
were loads of Jelly fish, which can be very dangerous
if you tread on them.

It was very kind of you to read and leave a nice
message. Thankyou.

Jenny, you are such an amazing person. To stay with that little soul 'til its end is a truly inspiring thing to do. And then to write such a beautiful poem about it - I salute you. This world needs more Jennys in it :)

Hi Rachel,

that is such a kind thing to say, I'm really humbled
by your words. I just felt so sorry for the poor
little thing, it was shaking so bad.

Anyway thankyou so much for that amazing comment,
also for reading. It's always much appreciated.

a true story :) you must be a very kind heart to stop on a stormy beach for one bird Jenny and for remembering it even though it died you helped K

skinner_jennifer | June 6, 2011 - 09:52

Hi Kahdai,

We were on holiday in Florida. I had gone for a long
walk along the beach, a storm was heading my way, I
was getting really worried, because their storms can
be quite bad. Anyway I was just walking back along
the beach to the hotel, I was suddenly struck how
quickly the storm was upon me, it really got bad,
then I saw the poor bird.

Again it had been washed up on the beach and I was so
sorry for it. I'm afraid I'm a sucker when it comes
to creatures in pain, or suffering, I can't help
myself, I just have to help them.

Anyway thankyou for reading this poem and commenting,

Jenny.

Ofcourse remembering your old ways can help with caring for wild animals, they are more happy to be treated by plants than chemical medicine :) You are great Jenny

Thankyou so much Kahdai.
