If I were but a little lamb
I’d leap from stream to stream
I’d always be just what I am
And never have a dream.
But now I smoke a fat cigar
And cough from dawn to dusk
I’ll always be just what I are
And never suck a rusk
They ask me how I got this way
And I do tell them true
A goblin ate my shoes one day
It happen could to you
I walked around in tootsies bare
To Ozard with the Wiz
He told me then with stony stare
You are just what you is
I said it’s false, it isn’t true,
A lie it is for sure
I’d know it now if I were me
And not the one before
The wiz said go and do not come
And do not stop half way
Go crawling home upon your tum
And never stop to play
But stop to play I often did
For then I knew no fear
When night time came I ran and hid
And drank a glass of beer
And that is how I came to be
The very man I are
I is just what I am, you see
And never travel far
A sixpence for my tale, kind sir
And you will have good luck
Let no man tell you what you were
Nor steal away your duck
Then you will be a lamb one day
And leap from fire to pan
I don’t care what the others say
You are a fine young man

Excellent, fun poem. I was reminded of Jabberwocky and also Stanley Unwin's odd Victorian-kidspeak idiolect on the Small Faces' 'Ogden's Nut Gone Flake' album.
Are you seaty comfty-bold too-square on your botty? Then I'll begin...

That was a very nice thing to say, Macjoyce. I haven't got ONF but I know the LP (the CD's no good - you don't get the fancy cover). I did have Jabberwocky at the back of my mind but not Stanley Unwin. Thank you for your comment. I'm a fan of your work so it means a lot to me.

I agree with Macjoyce and Val, a brilliant nonsense poem that makes an awful lot of sense ;)

It is an excellent nonsense poem - something I'm incapable of so am quite envious.

So like fur fabric and as light, it could take off.
