Married

Married.

My friends they used to be married
Now they are divorced
Two happy free lovers
Who both fell off the horse

It was an uncomfortable sight
At the parting of their ways
They asked me who was right
I played a cow that grazed

I’m not one for taking sides
I tried to make it clear
They were both unimpressed
Which made me disappear

To a brand new town
Where a mild wind blows
I met other married people
Who told me their woes

Why me?
Do I look like a referee?
Do I actually talk any sense?
Can I not just sit on the fence?

Some men wear a ring
Women always do
It’s a sign of belonging
And pretending to be true

Maybe on that big day
Love was the big redeemer
But that was before the wondering
If the grass over the wall is greener

I have learnt my lesson
There are no wishing wells
And I will always walk the other way
From the sound of wedding bells
