Nighthawk with Broken Wings

Nighthawk with broken wings

It was raining it was dark
It was an evening falling apart
And nobody would admit to anything
It was just another event
And I don’t know where it went
There were no gifts that anyone could bring

That cacophony of sound
That keeps us underground
Is something that will always mystify
And the staggered aimless gait
As we stumble home too late
Is proof enough that none of us can fly

So say goodnight to your hopes
And rig yourself some ropes
And see how you’re hanging by a thread
I can see you on your floor
And you can’t ask for anymore
There is no truth in anything you’ve said

You’re just a nighthawk with broken wings
Convinced that you’ve dined with kings
Despite the truth of you simply being alone
You can’t see what others see
It’s like you’ve fallen from a tree
Here comes a stranger to take you home

You’re just a nighthawk with broken wings
A midnight bell that never rings
And your voice reaches no one’s ears
Oh I know you know it’s time
To find some stairs that you can climb
But it’s been like this for so many years
