I used to think that my perfect life would one day be delivered to me in a box. When it arrived I would carefully unpack it: here would be my gorgeous wife and picture-perfect children; here my loyal and devoted friends; here the scintillating conversations I would have. Having lovingly laid out the component parts I would assemble them into my wonderful life. Then I would begin to live it. Until my box arrived there was nothing to do but wait.
Once I met a beautiful Russian girl. I could hardly believe somebody so perfect would be interested in me, but we spent a glorious evening together and got on like an exploding sun. I wondered whether she would be in my box. Perhaps she wouldn’t be. Perhaps she wasn’t the right girl at all. Until my box arrived I couldn’t be sure. She was confused by the mixed messages and withdrew. Never mind. If she was in my box she’d be back.
Opportunities came and went. Were they the right ones? No point in putting in any effort until I was sure. I wondered what sort of career my box would contain, who my friends would be, what adventures I would have. I couldn’t wait for it to arrive.
Now I fear the postman will be too late. Perhaps he isn’t coming at all. Has he lost the way? Was my parcel incorrectly addressed? Maybe when it arrives it will contain nothing but old age and a funeral. But I am not downhearted. I have discovered Jesus and there’s always my perfect afterlife to look forward to. I wonder what my heavenly box will contain?

Yours is of those elaborate boxes Stefano...wrapped in ribbon and brimming with literary delights.

You could have entered this in the competition, Stef. A sure win, in my opinion.

I'm leaving the way clear for you, FTSE. Are you still going to finish Inside-Out?

Probably. I've been feeling a bit yucky over the weekend. I'll take another look at it tomorrow.
