Take me to the ocean

Eyes of sapphire, hair softer than silk
And a heart of gold to match
That mermaid at the front of the ship?
She is nothing compared to me
But it’s not my skin that makes me beautiful
Not my figure that makes this crew love me
The ship sets sail onward to somewhere I won’t notice
For my spirit has long left this world behind
It’s jewels on my mind and gold coins against my heart
Smuggle me; your rotting treasure chest

Young wenches and whores come by the dozen
They beg to be on board then bitch about the journey
But I’ve not once opened my mouth to complain
I’m a good girl, they say, good for the ship
They tell me life’s never been better
And the Captain just loves me
Paying me compliments as he counts his money
He tells me I’m beautiful
That I make him the happiest man on the seven seas

Take me back to the ocean I lived on
Trapped beneath the waves
Out of control and out of luck
“Give Davey our love!”
Saved at last
More than my outsides in gold
True value comes within
They tell me I'm beautiful, every damn day

Yes, I liked this very much. It has the mixture of beauty and sadness that comes into all of the great sea stories. Makes me think of the last lines of Susan Cooper's 'Greenwitch', or a story called 'The Mermaid of Emmeloord' which is in an old collection of sea stories I have somewhere.
