Dawn

from the ABC set Life is Bittersweet

so this is love;
you beside me
not looking a day over nineteen
and yet,
it's been nearly a decade
since we were that young

i can smell the medicine
on your breath-
like oranges,
but not as sweet,
and i shut my eyes
so the tears don't fall

dawn is breaking
and we are quiet;
you hold me tight
knowing
i'm anxious about today,
anxious about tomorrow

it's just the way it is
now;
i have my demons
and you have yours-
i run my fingers
down your spine

watch you shiver
feel you shiver

our youth is slipping away-
too many
bitter days and bitter pills...
the fear and the panic
grips me, silently;
threatens

to pull me down
pull me away
and i try to save myself,
but
somehow
you get there first

your lips meet mine,
soft and effortless.
behind you the daylight
spreads
brighter, kinder;
like hope

A nice opening stanza to a romantic poem, dear SC, as sweet as the cherries that accompany it.
