They are always there
In the shadows
The ghosts of past lovers
Ever present reminders
Of the uncertain paths I trod
Yes they are always there
In the shadows
Conspiring to confuse
With their collective ambiguity
And their murmured counsel
Now and then
Light filters through the cracks in my defenses
And picks out each enigmatic form
Memories borne on the dust
Selected remembrances
Coloured by time
Shaped by lost desires and played out dreams
But they are always there
In the shadows
The faithful and the faithless
The beloved and the lost
Ghosts of my past lovers
Ghosts of my past lovers

A short but satisfying piece. I particularly like the repetition of
"But they are always there
In the shadows,"
It suits the tone of this piece. Good to 'see' you, incidentally.

This is a very good piece Sunshine and deserves more reads!
My only query is "seep" - not something I feel that light does
(nor indeed sunshine :O)
Since you've already used "Occasional" then simply "shine" might be more appropriate.

thanks for both your comments. I've now amended having considered your comment mykle and confess to knowing seep didn't work, tho' I liked it, but I got lazy/hasty and didn't change before submitting. UPDATE: I've now changed to 'filtered', having rejected such as 'breaks' and 'forces' as they imply too great a threat to the equilibrium. Still working on it tho'. Margot

this reads well and feels classic (in a good way).
"The faithful and the faithless" i particularly like this line.
good work.

While I like 'seep' too, but 'filters' does work better.
I think I would use something more like 'strays' or even 'steals'.
