Graduation?

from the ABC set Lurve Ramblings

Summer: 1973
We cheered;
Threw our arms in the air!
FREE! Free at last!
We jumped around, hugging,
Our hair flaring behind us;
Like Rock Stars.
I felt like singing
But suppressed the urge.
We owned the world and
The world was lucky to have us!
The Head had said as much.
For a change, we listened.

Summer, 1977:
We cheered;
Threw our Mortar Boards in the air!
FREE! Free at last!
We jumped around, hugging,
Our robes flaring behind us;
Like Super stars.
I felt like flying
But suppressed the urge.
We owned the world and
The world was lucky to have us!
The Dean had said as much.
For a change, we listened.

Summer, 1993
I cried
Threw my wedding ring in the river!
FREE! Free again!
I jumped, arms wrapped around hugging.
My jacket flaring out behind me;
Like a falling star
It felt like flying
But then submerged
I owned nothing in the world
The world was better without me!
She had said as much.
For a change, I listened.

So horrendously sad, but love the tight, repetitive shape of the stanzas!

Thoroughly good - such a shame about the marriage!

p.s. you ARE valued!

I agree with Jen, the repetition really works! Such a sorrowful, haunting end!

Amazing, sad, thought-provoking, powerful and so on... ;-)

There aren't enough words for this poem, it really is beautiful. Well done.

Nathan.
