A Red Dress and A Park Bench

from the ABC set Lurve Ramblings

It was here she sat on this simple park bench
between the oaks,
the summer sun and leaves,
with the aid of a zephyr, dapple laughter
innocently upon her beauty
and her smile, ricochets
from the underside of the boughs.

Searching my mind, I have wondered;
was it the beauty of the innocence
or the innocence of the beauty therein
that radiated more potently?

There was music and its name was laughter.
Composed in the heart,
its purity, sanctifying, glorious
and shared selflessly; lovingly.

I fancy I can see her yet, beckoning.
sitting in her red dress,
the backdrop of yellow daffodils
slowly genuflecting in the breeze;
waving, as if to fan a flame.

The flame has died now but the embers
live on in my breast;
in my mind and in my memory.
I bring my grandchildren here now.
The bench is worn and as I slide my fingers
along its surface, I hear the music
and the oaks dapple tears
Longingly upon my cheeks.

Yes. I don't usually read poetry, but I like this.

This is a delightful poem, threeleafshamrock.

'Searching my mind, I have wondered;
was it the beauty of the innocence
or the innocence of the beauty therein
that radiated more potently?'

Lovely, lovely.

Ah Chris, this is just lovely, mate. I might call you a big old softie, but then that would be the pot calling the kettle black :)

There are some beautiful lines in this, mate and the last stanza is a knockout. Good luck.

Hey D. we should start up a 'Softies' club...I bet we would get a lot more than some might think haha! Thanks for the comments mate, appreciated! ;)

Can't go wrong with the old passage of time shamrock. Brings out the softy in all of us. :)

'the backdrop of yellow daffodils
slowly genuflecting in the breeze;
waving, as if to fan a flame.'

some brilliant lines in this poem. The use of colour and images reminds me of Sylvia Plath, but it is definitely what I'd call Chris' style of poetry!

A lovely and atmospheric read. Well done.

Nathan.

Really good stuff. Stand out lines for me are:

'There was music and its name was laughter.'

and

'and the oaks dapple tears
Longingly upon my cheeks.'

Superb imagery throughout, really haunting tone, Mr Ordinary Joe!

Chris, I'm sure we'd get a lot more but I also think many would deny it because they don't want to be found out LOL

'the summer sun and leaves,

what gorgeous imagery! Love this Chris, I think I'm the one who wasted the fiver ;)

Beautiful, very well done. Peaceful and very, very atmospheric.

Loved these lines in particular;

and her smile, ricochets
from the underside of the boughs.

Good luck and again, well done!

Nice stuff. I liked "genuflecting" too. There isn't enough of it about you know.

Thanks.
JM.

"Zephyr." It's a beautiful word. I've often thought what the origin could be. My father had a Ford Zephyr when I was small. Was a bit of a sports-car.

threeleafshamrock | March 24, 2010 - 14:52

Hi Nolan, my father also had a Ford Zephyr6; it went like the wind ;) I think the car stole the name but it matched it well,

Chris ;)
