"in spite of"

from the ABC set ∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙∙this poem book that he gave

one cold spring day,
skies full of rough rain,
a tightly budded blossom
decided to open.

rain pelted against
the inverted leaf
umbrella; virgin petals
struggled with their unfold.

though tattered, torn,
the bloom stretched open
with such hope as was
its nature and purpose.
