The Light on the Landing

When I was a little girl I used to have to be tucked up in bed before the landing light could be turned off, so that when I was left in the dark I knew I was safe. I always had to have my bedroom door open too so I could listen to the television in your room while my eyes readjusted and could make out the familiar shapes around me. If I was still awake when the sound of the television stopped I knew I was having trouble getting to sleep, but if I was worried, I knew you were just across the landing if I needed you.
It’s been a long time since I’ve needed to hear the sound of your television to lull me to sleep at night and time saw a closed bedroom door become an essential part of my privacy.
But tonight, I wait for you to get safely tucked up in bed before I turn the landing light off, and I make sure I leave my bedroom door ajar so you know I’m here if you need me in the middle of the night.
It’s my turn to look after you now.
