Stranger Than Romantic Fiction (Song)

from the ABC set Lyrics

Like crayon pictures,
with big smiling suns
that i drew when i was four years old
and my heart was young.

or like Buck Rogers
in Twenty Four Oh One
with comic book rocket ships
and cosmic ray guns.

It’s unrealistic
the way i feel,
and i have to pinch myself
just to make sure it’s real.

I was a sceptic
when we first met
then my heart leapt to the moon
and i saw the earth set.

It was stranger
than romantic fiction,
like hollywood
but twice as good.
Those love song
poetic depictions
tried to capture it
but never could.

It was stranger
than romantic fiction,
like hollywood
but twice as good.
Those love song
poetic depictions
tried to capture it
but never could.

Like miracle cures
in magazine ads,
that promise to make you rich and thin
or your money back.

Like in a cartoon,
when characters fall
off of a cliff but bounce right back just
like a rubber ball.

It’s unrealistic
the way i feel,
and i have to pinch myself
just to make sure it’s real.

I was a sceptic
when we first met
then my heart leapt to the moon
and i saw the earth set.

It was stranger
than romantic fiction,
like hollywood
but twice as good.
Those love song
poetic depictions
tried to capture it
but never could.

It was stranger
than romantic fiction,
like hollywood
but twice as good.
Those love song
poetic depictions
tried to capture it
but never could.

Hi well-wisher,

I really liked your lyrics in this piece especially:-

Like in a cartoon,
when characters fall
off of a cliff but bounce right back just
like a rubber ball.

Jenny.

Hi w-w, I guess the repeated stanzas are choruses. I like this and the other one. You are very lyrical. When I was younger (young) I used to put more store on the musicality (melody) of a record (yes, it's that long ago) and not so much on the lyrics. These days, the lyrics mean much more to me. You are going to have to hang your hat on a songsmith's pego. Nice one.

Thanks, Jenny, Sue and Tina too.

With regard to Sue Dinums's comment. I think that, in the old days of Broadway musicals and Tin Pan Alley when, more often than not, music and lyrics were created by two different people, ignoring the lyrics would mean ignoring the lyricist and their part in the creation of a song but, nowadays, when
many song lyrics are no more than a lead singer/
musicians stream of consciousness ramblings, it is often easier to just enjoy the music and ignore the lyrics.

There are quite a few lyricists that I find to be overrated, like Morrissey (What would Morrisey be without Marr's guitar) and quite a few that I think are underrated like Suggs from Madness (Our House, The Sun and the Rain. Really clever and witty lyrics)
but I think that sometimes the lyrics can be a vital part of a songs appeal. Just imagine John Lennon's
"Imagine" with any other lyrics, the words are a vital part of what makes that song special.
