Cry England

from the ABC set 2007

Random acts of weirdness
in midweek shopping malls.
Rebel armies of wives,
the disenfranchised, care
in the community
waifs. Nobody is safe

from snipers maddened by
muzak and satellite
news channels churning out
cover-ups. Over cups
of coffee, secrets are
passed. Sold out underclass

failing to grasp the last
gasp of freedom, the fag
end of fear. Beneath eyes
and ears of closed circuit
spies, mothers in hooded
tops evaluate plots

and soap opera flights
of fancy. Spending nights
gathering clues from scenes
of normality, fraught
with coincidence, short
changed by banality.

Deranged; an army of
strangers, united by
ignorance, under flags
of intolerance, takes
a stand: Equality
for jolly old Saint George,

cry England and Hearts of
Oak! For we are the broke,
the muddled masses brought
low by the highbrow. Rich
in dreams of lottery
cash. Albion the brash.
