Shelley's Washing Machine

from the ABC set 2007

He takes his Lithium and is as good as
gold, though his corrected limb twinges when
it’s cold. With a smile serene as Buddha’s,
he writes light, free verse that unhinges men
from madness: Bright and brittle words on themes
of domestic bliss, inspired by Larkin
- or is it just a piss take? For it seems
our young Percy is still mad: As barkin’
and dangerous as a Lord; bad to know,
worse to ignore. He pens a line so slick,
about a washing machine, just to show
us it can be done. Makes us fucking sick.
